Charcoal-grilled sea eel at Daedo Jangeo, a Changwon restaurant

In short

Daedo Jangeo (대도장어) is a charcoal-grilled eel restaurant near Changwon Station in Palyong-dong. Visiting for a weekday lunch with her mom, the writer ordered a medium sea eel seasoned grill plus eel soup with rice, finding the eel crisp outside, moist inside, deeply smoky from the briquette fire, with a mild, not-too-strong seasoning. It's a solid pick for a nourishing lunch or dinner with parents.

Taking a day off for a weekday lunch date with mom

A while back my mom and I did one of those fun online fortune-telling readings for kicks, and when it asked 'how are you feeling right now?' she picked 'lonely.' That kept bugging me, so as the eldest daughter I did what any dutiful Korean daughter would do — took a day off on a weekday and went on a date with just the two of us :)

I told her in advance, 'You're spending the whole day with me, so clear your schedule no matter what!!' And when we met up, she said, 'I was so excited I couldn't sleep well even the night before~' ㅠㅠ Mom, I'll try even harder for you ㅠㅠ That was some unnecessary personal info, haha.

In the morning we did an enzyme sauna, and for lunch I wanted to properly nourish my mom's body, so we headed to Daedo Jangeo in Palyong-dong, Changwon. What's the go-to for nourishing your body?? Eel~~~!!!

It's located near Changwon Station, so it was easy to find, and Daedo Jangeo is already famous as one of Changwon's go-to eel restaurants! You can park in front of the restaurant or at the public lot right next door, and after eating you just get your parking ticket validated!

Daedo Jangeo specializes in eel grilled directly over charcoal briquettes. When you think 'eel restaurant' you usually picture charcoal or gas grills, but this place sticks to the old-school method of direct briquette grilling!

Oh! So this is the 30-year local landmark Namgang Jangeo that used to be in front of Jinjuseong Fortress, relocated to Daedo Jangeo in Palyong-dong, Changwon!!

What's the atmosphere like inside?

Thoughtful amenities provided for guests in the restaurant

Restaurants these days really are full of thoughtful little touches for guests..!!

What we ordered and the side dishes

What my mom and I ordered that day: sea eel seasoned grill (medium), plus eel soup with rice.

Menu breakdown for sea eel and freshwater eel dishes

Honestly I wanted half salt-grilled, half seasoned-grilled, but turns out sea eel can't be split that way ㅠㅠ. I asked the staff which one tastes better, and they quietly told me they'd recommend the seasoned grill, even though both are good haha. Just so you know, freshwater eel grill CAN be split half salt/half seasoned! Light but filling — and there's a lunch special menu too, worth keeping in mind!

They set out the side dishes as soon as we ordered~

Plates of mild, not-too-strong side dishes

None of the side dishes were too strong-flavored, so they went well with the grilled eel. By the way, this place's kimchi-ish, fresh-salad-ish side dish (겉절이) is seriously delicious..!!

Self-serve bar for extra side dishes

You can freely help yourself to extra side dishes at the self-serve bar without feeling awkward about it~

How the charcoal-grilled sea eel seasoned grill tastes

Plate of golden-brown grilled eel

Enter the golden-brown grilled eel!! The outside was grilled slightly crisp while the inside stayed moist and tender, so the texture was pretty great. What really set it apart from ordinary grilled eel was the deep smoky flavor from the direct briquette fire! There wasn't a hint of the fishy smell eel can sometimes have, and you could really taste the eel's savory, clean natural flavor.

Pickled ginger served alongside the grilled eel

Oh, and make sure to eat it with the pickled ginger here. Grilled eel plus pickled ginger is a match made in heaven.

The seasoning wasn't too intense or sharp, so it really brought out the eel's savory flavor~! It's exactly the kind of seasoning everyone can agree on +_+

My mom said it was delicious too, which made me feel weirdly proud, haha. I guess when it comes to feeding your parents, how happily they eat matters way more than how expensive the food is!

Isn't eel soup fishy?

We also ordered eel soup with rice to go along with the grilled eel.

Eel soup with napa cabbage and vegetables
Eel soup served with a bowl of rice

I expected eel soup to have a strong fishy taste, but the broth was savory yet clean and refreshing, easy to eat without any hesitation. It had napa cabbage and other vegetables in it, giving the broth a natural sweetness and cleanness, and after a bite of grilled eel, a warm spoonful of the soup felt like it reset my palate!

My mom's hand liberally sprinkling on the Sichuan pepper powder~~

It wasn't sharply spicy or salty, just a savory, mild broth, so I think older folks especially would love it. Having the eel soup alongside the grilled eel, instead of just the eel alone, made it feel like a proper nourishing lunch. Grilled eel + eel soup + rice really is a combo that never fails!

A weekday lunch made even better with mom

Honestly, you don't need to go somewhere fancy — just sitting and eating leisurely with my mom, chatting, turned out to be a pretty precious time for me. Taking a day off to meet on a weekday gave it a different kind of relaxed feeling than the weekend would have! Between the delicious eel and all the chatting, it felt like a proper mother-daughter date after a long time.

Sweet rice punch (sikhye) served as dessert after the meal

And the sweet rice punch (식혜) they gave us for dessert at the end was the perfect finish 💕 If you're looking for grilled eel in Palyong-dong, Changwon, definitely give Daedo Jangeo a try!

If you love that distinct smoky flavor from direct briquette grilling, you'll enjoy this even more. Next time I should bring my dad along too and try the freshwater eel half salt/half seasoned (he's actually a little sulky he missed out this time ♥). If you're looking for a lunch or dinner spot to share with your parents in Palyong-dong, Changwon, I recommend Daedo Jangeo!
