A steaming bowl of gukbap

On days like these, when the temperature swings wildly or the air turns chilly, I find myself especially craving a steaming, hearty bowl of gukbap (rice soup).

Visiting a gukbap restaurant in Bangi-dong

For a while, I had been desperately wanting gukbap filled with meat in a deep, rich broth, so I looked into good gukbap spots around Bangi-dong and ended up visiting Boseung Hoegwan Bangi Branch (보승회관 방이점)!

It is already well known among gukbap lovers, so I arrived with high expectations—and went home completely satisfied. The food was great, of course, but the parking and amenities were perfect too.

There are so many cars around Bangi-dong and Jamsil, and parking can be tricky, so whenever I drive somewhere, parking is always my first worry.

Boseung Hoegwan Bangi Branch had plenty of parking not only right in front of the restaurant but also along the side!

I could park comfortably and walk straight in without any parking stress, which made things feel so easy and pleasant from the entrance onward.

How was the spicy pork jowl gukbap?

After taking a look through the menu, I ordered spicy pork jowl gukbap, a dish I have always loved! Sundae-guk (Korean blood sausage soup) and pork gukbap are also popular around Bangi-dong, but I simply could not skip Boseung Hoegwan's special pork jowl gukbap.

After a short wait, the spicy pork jowl gukbap arrived bubbling away deliciously, along with neatly arranged side dishes.

Bubbling gukbap with side dishes

The basic sides included kkakdugi (cubed radish kimchi), napa cabbage kimchi, fresh chives, and salted shrimp for seasoning—all perfect partners for gukbap.

The kkakdugi and napa cabbage kimchi were so excellent that this place could practically be called a kimchi restaurant!

Crisp kkakdugi and napa cabbage kimchi

The kkakdugi was crisp, nicely fermented, and wonderfully refreshing, while the napa cabbage kimchi was spicy and full of savory flavor. Piling it right onto the gukbap was absolutely amazing.

The gukbap was generously packed with rich, tender pork jowl, and I could not help but be impressed!

Generous pieces of pork jowl

Every spoonful brought up big, chewy pieces of pork jowl. The spicy, warming, rich broth had soaked beautifully into the meat, and from the first bite, it felt like it soothed me from the inside out.

I added lots of chives and ate them with the meat, then seasoned it lightly with salted shrimp—the flavors came even more alive.

After mixing in a bowl of rice and topping each bite with kkakdugi, I polished off what had seemed like such a huge bowl of gukbap in no time. I was so satisfyingly full that I wanted for nothing!
