Gwacheon Korean restaurant, dried pollack soup and tot rice: Haenon

In short

Haenon Miyeok Gwacheon Direct Branch is a restorative seaweed soup set restaurant in Munwon-dong, Gwacheon, Gyeonggi, near the community center and the entrance to the Cheonggyesan hiking trail. The writer ordered one boneless flounder seaweed soup set and one dried pollack seaweed soup set to compare them; both arrived in stone pots too hot to touch and stayed steaming to the last spoonful, and the tot rice (brown seaweed rice) was refilled free with one press of the bell. Even the standard banchan at Haenon Miyeok — fried flounder topped with spicy codari sauce, fried eggplant and japchae (glass noodles) — emptied a bowl of rice on their own.

I'm not really a big soup person, but when I want a hearty, comforting meal, it's always a hot, rich broth I crave.

This time I'm introducing a Korean restaurant in Gwacheon that I really loved. Haenon Miyeok specializes in seaweed soup (miyeokguk) made carefully with fresh ingredients as a restorative meal.

It's different from the seaweed soup you make at home — the flavor is deep and rich. Haenon Miyeok Gwacheon Direct Branch is located near the Munwon-dong community center, and since the Cheonggyesan hiking trail entrance is nearby, it's a convenient spot to stop by on the way in or out.

What is Haenon Miyeok Gwacheon Direct Branch like inside?

Haenon Miyeok Gwacheon Direct Branch is a standalone building, so you're already impressed before you even step inside. Taste matters, of course, but I think the hygiene and atmosphere of a restaurant are just as important in shaping how satisfying a meal feels.

As a standalone building, Haenon Miyeok already looks great from outside, and once you step in you get an open, airy view and a clean, tidy feeling. They clearly pay a lot of attention to cleanliness — there wasn't a corner left untouched.

The tables, floors, even around the self-serve bar were spotless and gleaming, so even people who are sensitive about hygiene could relax and focus on the meal. The space was also nicely open, making it comfortable to chat and enjoy a leisurely meal.

Instead of a busy, chaotic dining hall, it has the feel of being treated well while you eat cleanly. There was a group of guests celebrating a birthday with a cake, which was a nice sight — cake is a must for birthdays, right? For birthday guests who book via Naver reservation (parties of 4 or more), they give out a birthday cake. It's provided within 7 days of the birthday on your resident registration, so it's worth using.

Dried pollack or boneless flounder seaweed soup set: what's the difference?

At Haenon Miyeok Gwacheon Direct Branch, we each picked one — the boneless flounder seaweed soup set and the dried pollack seaweed soup set — whichever we each felt like eating. The first thing that surprised me the moment the food arrived was the temperature of the bowls. They come out boiling hot in stone pots, hot enough to burn you, and they looked absolutely delicious.

Food is always best piping hot, and this stayed hot all the way to the last spoonful, letting us enjoy the rich flavor throughout.

Usually elsewhere you get a chunk of flounder or the whole fish dropped in. Here, they pick apart an entire flounder's flesh and pile it generously into the broth.

Compared to leaving the fish whole, having the flesh shredded into the broth lets the flavor naturally seep out, giving the soup a thick, deep taste. There was zero fishy smell, plenty of savory flavor, and a generous portion.

Another thing I liked — at many places you can barely tell there's dried pollack (hwangtae) in there at all, but here the pieces are big, not shredded thin, so you get a nice chewy texture and the broth tastes even more refreshing and clean.

Banchan lineup and unlimited tot rice refills

The main dish alone would be more than enough, but Haenon Miyeok's real charm is in the basic side dishes (banchan).

There's a fresh salad to lightly wake up your appetite, plus fried flounder topped with a sweet-spicy sauced pollack (kodari) seasoning, served as a basic side dish.

The quality was good enough to pass as a main dish — this alone could easily finish off a bowl of rice.

On top of that, there's crispy-outside-tender-inside fried eggplant and japchae (glass noodle stir-fry) among the neat, flavorful side dishes, filling out the table generously.

The rice served alongside isn't plain white rice either — it's cooked with tot (brown seaweed) mixed in for both flavor and nutrition. The seaweed soup itself comes so generously that the rice portion might look small by comparison, but there's no need to worry, since it's free refill. Just press the bell and they'll bring you more tot rice, served in a white ceramic bowl with a lid, as many times as you like.

There's also a self-serve bar set up in one corner of the restaurant, kept at the right temperature with the same food that's served at the table, so make sure to use it too. There were extra kinds of kimchi at the self-serve bar.
