Gangneung sashimi restaurant takeaway with abalone: Minja Hoetjip

In short

Minja Hoetjip is a sashimi and seafood restaurant at the entrance to Jumunjin Fish Market in Gangneung, Gangwon. My husband and I took home the medium assorted sashimi platter for 60,000 won, with flounder, yellowtail, salmon, abalone, sea squirt, and more. Verdict: a generous, easy-to-pick-up seafood feast for home.

Minja Hoetjip is a Jumunjin sashimi restaurant with a 60-year tradition, selling live fish sashimi and a range of seafood for many years. They hold a blowfish-cooking certificate, and they are also known for their Jumunjin mulhoe (cold raw-fish soup), which took first place for squid mulhoe on 6 O'Clock Hometown. When you order sashimi to go, they also pack assorted seafood such as abalone and sea squirts, so it is a nice place to pick up sashimi in Jumunjin.

We were craving sashimi too, so my husband and I headed to Jumunjin Fish Market to take some home at a good value. As soon as we entered the market, Minja Hoetjip was right in front of us, so it was not hard to find.

Park at Jumunjin Coastal Parking Tower, cross the road directly in front, and you will reach the entrance to Jumunjin Fish Market, marked by a large whale sculpture. It is close to Jumunjin Port, making it an easy stop during a trip too.

Inside, sashimi restaurants and seafood shops line both sides. The tanks were full of live fish and seafood, so we looked around as we walked in.

There are plenty of tables inside, so you can eat sashimi at the restaurant as well as take it away.

Along with assorted sashimi, there were flounder, rockfish, sea bream, salmon, and seasonal live fish, plus mulhoe and hoe-deopbap (rice topped with raw fish). We ordered the medium assorted sashimi platter to eat comfortably at home. Minja Hoetjip offered a special discounted price for takeaway orders.

There were several kinds of live fish in the tanks in front of the shop. Being able to see them and choose for yourself is another fun part of a fish market.

The large snow crabs looked fresh too,

Flounder, yellowtail, salmon, and more were arranged on one platter for easy eating, and the sashimi was sliced thickly, making it look extra appetizing. Along with the assorted sashimi, they packed abalone, sea squirts, shrimp, and whelks and other shellfish. It made the whole spread much more abundant than sashimi alone.

The salmon was sliced thickly too, and I loved its soft texture. Our daughter loves salmon, so the salmon was hers haha.

Taking it home also meant we could eat at our own pace and have a drink with my husband, which was really nice.

I put sashimi, garlic, and chili pepper on lettuce with ssamjang (seasoned soybean paste), and one bite was absolutely delicious.

The seafood they included was fresh and pleasantly chewy, so it was great alongside the sashimi.

The assorted sashimi varies slightly in color and grain depending on the cut. I liked the tender yellowtail, while my husband said he liked the flounder best, haha.

It was takeaway sashimi eaten at home, but with all the seafood laid out too, we got to enjoy a wonderfully generous spread.
