Gangneung café for chocolate cruffins and jazz: Coffee Dripper

In short

Coffee Dripper is a roastery café in Gangneung, Gangwon, inside Chodang Sundubu Village. After a Gyeongpo Pavilion walk, I tried the Chocolate Cone Latte, chocolate cruffin, and financiers amid free-flowing jazz; the bakery was nearly gone by 14:00. Verdict: Come early for a pleasantly sweet pastry-and-coffee stop.

I had definitely been walking along the sea at Gyeongpo Pavilion in Gangneung, then came to Coffee Dripper in Chodang-dong... but the change of scene happened in an instant. It feels like a café in Yeonhui-dong or Apgujeong... what is this?

Chocolate Cone Latte. Coffee soft ice cream. Hahaha, I like this. What will it taste like... haha, I’m not supposed to drink coffee, but I have to taste it 😂

Wait, there are already hardly any bakery items left. I came around 14:00 ㅜ They open at 10:00 and close at 18:00. You need to come early.

Gangneung Dripper is a roastery café that has served hand-drip coffee made with beans roasted in-house in Gyodong, Gangneung, since 2012.

They have carried on classic coffee in the same place for over 10 years, then reopened in May 2026 with a new space and menu. Apparently, it used to be in Gyodong.

It is a 10-minute walk from Gangmun Beach, inside Chodang Sundubu Village, so it naturally fits into a Gangneung travel itinerary.

The signature menu includes the Dripper Latte (white almond mocha), a refreshed take on a signature from more than 10 years ago; the Chocolate Cone Latte, whose cone becomes the cup; coffee soft ice cream made with house-pulled espresso; sundubu (soft tofu) pudding made with Gangneung Chodang sundubu; Pine Forest Matcha Latte inspired by Gangneung’s pine groves; and Lemonade Sunset inspired by Gangneung sunsets. They also offer cruffins—croissants baked like muffins—in black sesame, vanilla, and chocolate, plus their own roasted beans.

Parking is available for around 13 cars, and there is group seating. We will serve travelers looking for a Gangneung café a lovely cup of coffee.

The coffee is tasty, the cone is tasty, and I have never seen this before. Coffee Dripper’s signature.

Financiers and a chocolate cruffin

There are lots of places that do financier tea cakes well. Coffee Dripper is one of them.

Yuja financier with a lovely balance of citrusy freshness and sweetness; salt-vanilla financier, crisp outside and soft inside, full of vanilla bean flavor; and chocolate financier rich with Valrhona flavor.

Why did Francis Bacon’s work come to mind?

Hmm, Francis Bacon’s work came to mind. Why, I wonder... ^^

This experience went beyond simply tasting a dessert: it was a brief but intense “sensory event” where aesthetic intuition and physical limits intersected.

Visual intuition (the chocolate cruffin and Francis Bacon)

Distortion of form: In the dripping, clumped chocolate and the cross-section of layered, torn pastry, I intuitively caught Bacon’s distinctive organic, irregular portrayals of the body, which dismantle conventional form.

Raw texture: The aesthetic stimulus of the sticky sheen and dark colors reached beyond the category of dessert, connecting to the vitality and existential anxiety in Bacon’s work.

The two sides of sensation (the boundary between aesthetic play and aversion)

Positive side: I experienced the delight of an exceptional sensitivity that reads a sophisticated art-historical and formal context in an everyday object, and of observing the overwhelming vividness of the material—chocolate.

Negative side: The dissonance between gustatory sweetness and Bacon-esque grotesqueness stood on a subtle sensory boundary where it could clash with the impulse to eat.

The limits of fullness and satisfaction (a little despair felt by a finite body)

Awareness of finitude: Even though I enjoyed it deliciously, when my body reached its limit—fullness—I felt a mysterious “despair” at not being able to fit in any more of that intense sensation.

Aftertaste and empty space: Paradoxically, this despair leaves the sensation etched in the mind for a long time, and the space left unfilled moves you toward the next sensory desire.

Chocolate cream inside the chocolate cruffin. It is not too sweet and it is tasty. What is just the right amount of sweetness...?

A feel-good space with jazz playing

I soaked up the feel-good atmosphere and the free-flowing melodies of jazz. Aha, that is why Yeonhui-dong and Apgujeong came to mind. Hahahaha.

With Coffee Dripper’s signature Chocolate Cone Latte, I take in a happy flavor and a happy time and space.
