Byeollae shabu kalguksu with a private room for five: Onjeongban

I'm raising a son who loves meat and hot broth, so we eat a lot of shabu-shabu. This time we went to Onjeongban Shabu Kalguksu, and the portions were huge and delicious — we came home very satisfied.

We eat out often on weekends. Grocery shopping, cooking, setting the table, cleaning up — it's such a hassle, so instead we go grab a good meal and look around a bit. We go to a lot of good restaurants in Namyangju haha. I found a great shabu-shabu spot and wanted to recommend it. A great-value restaurant in Namyangju: Onjeongban Shabu Kalguksu.

You can enjoy delicious shabu-shabu plus kalguksu and porridge, and the rice is unlimited refill, so the whole family can eat happily. It's popular and often full at dinnertime. Just sign up to wait outside using the Tabling machine.

Shabu-shabu is appealing because you get to eat lots of tasty, healthy vegetables in a warm, comforting broth.

After the vegetable and beef shabu-shabu, plus kalguksu and porridge, you're really, really full haha. It's such a satisfying value-for-money combo that it's clearly why so many people come. There can be a wait on weekends. Sign up at the machine outside and the wait usually isn't long since the interior isn't small — just have a seat outside for a bit.

What's on the menu at Onjeongban Shabu Kalguksu, and what it costs

The basic set most people think of — shabu vegetables + meat + kalguksu + porridge — is ₩11,000 per person. Amazing value haha.

My son loves boiled pork (bossam), so we ordered the pork set — the Onjeongban Shabu + Eomnamu Herbal Pork Set.

The gondeure rice (wild greens rice) is free so we got super full hahaha. But since we'd never tried the rolled dumplings (gurim mandu) before, I kind of regretted not ordering the dumpling set. We added rolled dumplings separately and they were so good. If you can, order the rolled dumpling set from the start so you get to try everything.

Why families book Onjeongban for gatherings

There were a lot of families dining at Onjeongban Shabu Kalguksu. It seems like a great menu for bringing parents and grandkids together. Honestly, shabu-shabu doesn't really have many haters, so I'd recommend it as a family dining-out spot too.

You can also order extra meat. Since my son loves bossam, we ordered the set that comes with boiled pork.

There tends to be a bit of a wait. If you don't want to wait, I'd definitely recommend making a reservation before you come.

The private room at Onjeongban: for parties of five or more

Onjeongban Shabu Kalguksu has a small private room for 5 or more people, so if you want to eat together cozily as a family, I'd recommend reserving it.

My son kept asking what the egg was.

It's a raw egg — they put it in when they boil the porridge.

They gave my son seaweed too — a service just for kids.

He carefully put the shabu-shabu meat in himself too.

New on the menu: handmade rolled dumplings

Onjeongban Shabu Kalguksu's new handmade rolled dumplings (gurim mandu) are genuinely delicious. The wrapper is so thin — how does it not tear? — and it's mild and clean-tasting. The rolled dumplings are a real treat, so make sure to order them hahaha.

I'd also recommend choosing the shabu-shabu that comes with the rolled dumplings included.

Free gondeure rice refills and free dessert at Onjeongban

At Onjeongban Shabu Kalguksu, the gondeure rice is free. There was also a tea called ssokdangcha, which we drank.

At the end, there's free slushie and traditional sweets for dessert — don't forget to grab some. That kind of thoughtfulness toward customers is really touching.

Shabu-shabu, porridge, kalguksu — everything's good at Onjeongban Shabu Kalguksu. Highly recommend it as a weekend family dining spot!
