Morning tteokbokki with tuna gimbap in Yeonnam-dong: Eungkeum

In short

Eungkeum Tteokbokki Yeonnam Branch is a 24-hour tteokbokki (spicy rice cake) and bunsik (Korean snack food) restaurant with a pojangmacha vibe in Yeonnam-dong, Seoul. Visiting in the early morning, the writer ordered two servings of original tteokbokki with wheat rice cakes, an assorted fried snack platter, and spicy mayo tuna gimbap (seaweed rice roll) — the tteokbokki leaned spicier than sweet, and the mini gimbap turned out surprisingly large. Portions run big, so two people should stick to one order of tteokbokki.

Today I visited Eungkeum Tteokbokki Yeonnam Branch, a well-known tteokbokki spot in Yeonnam-dong!

Hours and atmosphere at Eungkeum Tteokbokki Yeonnam Branch

It's open 24 hours a day, every day, so you can drop by whenever you get a tteokbokki craving, day or night — I love that so much haha!

We came in early in the morning, and true to its reputation as a soul food for women, most of the customers were women. The inside was clean, and the floor-to-ceiling windows let you see the street outside, which was really pretty haha. Delivery and takeout orders were pouring in too, so I felt like I'd really found a great tteokbokki spot in Yeonnam-dong!

How to order: tablets and kiosk

The menu board and ordering tips

I was surprised at how varied the menu at this Yeonnam-dong tteokbokki spot was, haha! There were budget-friendly sets, full meal options, tons of bunsik dishes, and even anju (drinking snacks) that make it work as a bar, too. Since it's open 24 hours, it's great for solo dining as well as for gatherings haha.

We ordered two servings of original Eungkeum Tteokbokki, an assorted fried snack platter, and spicy mayo tuna gimbap — but honestly, the tteokbokki was so cheap that we thought it was priced per person, so we ordered two... The portions are big, so if there are two of you, I'd recommend just ordering one serving of tteokbokki.

Assorted fried snacks — even better dipped in the tteokbokki sauce

The assorted fried snack platter came out first, and it really was a mix of all kinds of fried things, with a generous portion too haha!

  • Crispy sweet and sour pork (tangsuyuk)
  • Kimmari (fried seaweed rolls)
  • Yaki-mandu (pan-fried dumplings)
  • Vegetable fritters
  • Fried squid, and more

Dipping them in the tteokbokki sauce makes them even more special.

We also ordered a cold cola to wash it down, and they brought it out in an ice cup, which was such a nice touch haha. The owner was super friendly too — I want to come back often!

The spicy mayo tuna gimbap is the real star

Honestly, the tteokbokki was great, but the gimbap here is the real deal, haha. I thought the mini gimbap would be small, but I was surprised by how big it actually was, and the filling was so generous that just three pieces filled me up haha. We ordered the spicy mayo tuna version, packed with spicy cheongyang chili peppers — it had an addictive kick, and there was more filling than rice, giving it a rich, nutty, delicious flavor 🤍

Eungkeum Tteokbokki Original, ordered with wheat rice cakes

Next up was the Eungkeum Tteokbokki Original! It looked seriously spicy with its deep red color, and the portion was huge — you can also choose between wheat rice cakes (milddeok) and rice rice cakes (ssaldeok) haha. I'm firmly on team wheat rice cake, so that's what I ordered, and as expected, it was so chewy and delicious!

Since it was so cheap, we thought it was priced per person and ordered accordingly, and ended up just being the people who ordered a ridiculous amount of tteokbokki... haha. But the spicy-sweet flavor of this original tteokbokki is addictive, and it leans much more toward spicy than sweet, so if you like spicy food, I think you'll love it!

The rice cakes and fish cakes were seasoned so well — this Yeonnam-dong tteokbokki spot, Eungkeum Tteokbokki Yeonnam Branch, comes highly, highly recommended!
