Raw beef restaurant for lunchtime day drinking in Mapo, Seoul: Usijang
In short
Usijang Hoegwan (우시장회관) is a raw beef restaurant specialising in yuksashimi (raw beef sashimi) and yukhoe (seasoned raw beef), tucked into an alley between Mapo Station and Gongdeok Station in Seoul. A lunchtime stop after a trip to the baby's hospital brought yuksashimi, yukhoe and clam-beef rice soup, and both the chewy raw beef with no gamey smell and the clear, refreshing broth stood out. One look at the crowd of daytime drinkers and foreign visitors at Usijang Hoegwan explains why the place stays full.

If you're looking for a genuinely good meat restaurant or meal spot near Mapo, you've come to the right place!!! I went to my baby's hospital appointment and stopped by Usijang Hoegwan, a Mapo Station favorite, to try the yuksashimi (raw beef sashimi), yukhoe (seasoned raw beef), and clam-beef soup — and I left having found a restaurant of a lifetime, totally won over, so here's my write-up.

Where is Usijang Hoegwan, and what is lunchtime like?
Usijang Hoegwan sits at 15-10 Samgae-ro in Mapo-gu, Seoul, tucked into an alley between Mapo Station and Gongdeok Station. It's a quiet alley, but it's already a well-known Mapo Station favorite among people in the know.

Even the walk there gives off good-restaurant energy, and once inside, I noticed not just Korean customers but foreign visitors who'd clearly heard the word too.
It was a real moment of feeling how globally K-food's charm travels. You'd normally assume a beef or raw-beef specialty spot would be busiest with the evening drinking crowd, but Usijang Hoegwan had a good number of customers even at lunchtime.
Plenty of people were enjoying a meal with a side of daytime drinks, and it was immediately clear this place has firmly established itself as a go-to in the Mapo and Gongdeok area.

What do the yuksashimi and yukhoe at Usijang Hoegwan taste like?
The yuksashimi and yukhoe at Usijang Hoegwan came out together on one plate. The visual alone stood out — a glossy, deep red color that proved the meat's freshness on its own.

I picked up a piece of yuksashimi first and dipped it lightly in the house sauce. The moment I bit down, a chewy yet tender texture spread through my mouth — no off smell at all, just deep, savory flavor that had me sighing in appreciation.

I've had yuksashimi at plenty of places, but this was good enough that I'd dare to call it the best yuksashimi of my life.

The yukhoe I tried next had a seasoning that wasn't heavy-handed, letting the meat's own flavor shine through even more. The subtle nuttiness that built up with each bite was outstanding. If I hadn't driven, I would've ordered a bottle of soju right there at lunch — it's that good a drinking companion, even during the day. I also tried it wrapped in perilla leaf with a burst egg yolk on top — wow, game over!
Clam-beef rice soup: the broth that settles your stomach
Usijang Hoegwan's clam-beef soup arrived bubbling away in a stone pot. It showed up while I was still marveling over the yuksashimi — and that timing turned out to be perfect!!

Beef soup with clams might sound like an unusual pairing, but the moment you take a spoonful of the broth, you get it right away.

The deep flavor of rich beef broth blended with the refreshing, savory kick of clams, and it felt like my whole body cleared up in one sip. The beef was generously portioned too, giving every spoonful something to chew on, and the broth was so clean and refreshing that calling it the soup of a lifetime wouldn't be an exaggeration. It works wonderfully as a lunch dish, and just as well as a drinking snack or hangover cure.

Is Usijang Hoegwan worth a return visit?
From the vibrant freshness of the yuksashimi to the deep, refreshing broth of the clam-beef soup, every dish at Usijang Hoegwan showed real care and solid fundamentals. Eating there made it obvious why so many people show up from noon on, foreigners included. I was also struck by the staff member kindly explaining the menu to a foreign customer :)

If you're looking for great yuksashimi near Mapo Station, or want to properly explore what Gongdeok has to offer, I confidently recommend Usijang Hoegwan. I'm planning to come back soon with friends for a round of soju. My revisit intention is at 200 percent!!!
