In short

Goyu (고유) is a Korean dining restaurant with hanok charm on Hwangnidan-gil in Gyeongju, Gyeongbuk. The writer ate the mackerel perilla-oil buckwheat noodles, the cold pork with gangdoenjang kale ssambap and the eggplant gangjeong with a bottle of Horangi yuzu makgeolli, and both the food and the space were satisfying. Goyu is a place worth revisiting for an atmospheric Korean meal.

Goyu, hanok charm on Hwangnidan-gil

This is a place I found while looking for a restaurant with real atmosphere on Hwangnidan-gil in Gyeongju. From the entrance it gives off a serene yet emotive vibe, so my feet were naturally drawn in!

The exterior is a hanok (traditional Korean house), pretty and neat, so my expectations were already high before I stepped inside. It really captures the hanok aesthetic Hwangnidan-gil is known for, so it's great for photos too!

Inside, the ceilings are high so it never feels cramped, and with the soft lighting the atmosphere was lovely haha. It's just the kind of space for a date or for a meal on a special occasion.

What we ordered and the basic table setting

As befits a Korean dining spot, there's a wide lineup of traditional liquors, so it's great for a drink with your meal! After some deliberation we ordered the cold pork with gangdoenjang kale ssambap (₩18,000), the mackerel perilla-oil buckwheat noodles (₩18,000) and the eggplant gangjeong (₩9,000).

The basic setting comes with crisp geotjeori (fresh, lightly dressed kimchi) and a warm beef and radish soup. The radish soup broth was really deep and rich, perfect for settling the stomach as a palate opener before the food.

Everyone around us was having a drink, so we ordered a bottle of Horangi yuzu makgeolli (rice wine) too. The subtle yuzu aroma and smooth finish went really well with the Korean dishes haha

How were the mackerel perilla-oil buckwheat noodles?

At last, the mackerel perilla-oil buckwheat noodles arrived! The crisply grilled mackerel and the nutty scent of perilla oil brushed the tip of my nose and got my appetite going haha

I mixed the noodles and toppings well and took a bite — the golden-cooked mackerel wasn't fishy in the slightest and was incredibly savory. The clean-tasting buckwheat noodles and fragrant perilla oil come together in lovely harmony!!

Neat and pretty kale ssambap

The cold pork with gangdoenjang kale ssambap that came next was ridiculously pretty too... 🤍 Thanks to the care that went into the presentation, my mood lifted before I'd even taken a bite >.<

Cold pork with gangdoenjang kale ssambap plate

On top of the earthy gangdoenjang (thick soybean paste stew) sit neatly rolled little rounds of kale ssambap (rice wrapped in kale). Behind them, tender cold pork is piled high, so it was really generous!

Looking inside the kale ssambap, it isn't just rice — there are yellow egg strips and carrot in there too. The colorful look adds to the pleasure of eating it.

Dip the ssambap deep into the gangdoenjang and you get a deep flavor that isn't overpowering at all ~~ Healthy yet with a savory umami that clings to your palate — so appealing 👍

Put a little gangdoenjang on the ssambap, add a slice of the cold pork, and it's the perfect combination!! The softness of the meat and the freshness of the ssambap kept me reaching for more haha

Crispy-outside, tender-inside eggplant gangjeong

The eggplant gangjeong (crispy glazed fritters) that came next was fried beautifully with a very crisp coating. Crunchy on the outside and moist inside, the eggplant's signature texture really comes through.

Take a bite and the sweet-salty sauce spreads through your mouth while the nutty fried aroma rises >< That crispy texture makes it the best thing to enjoy with makgeolli!! I'd definitely recommend ordering the eggplant gangjeong as a side!

Verdict on this Hwangnidan-gil Korean restaurant in Gyeongju

A glass of sweet yuzu makgeolli alongside dishes made with such care — I couldn't have been happier... 🤍🤍 It was a meal where both the food and the feeling of the space left me satisfied.

If you're looking for a clean, atmospheric Korean dining spot or Korean pub on Hwangnidan-gil in Gyeongju, I wholeheartedly recommend it! With an uncommon, special menu lineup and dishes that bring out the natural flavor of the ingredients, every one was excellent — 100% would revisit >.<
