Western restaurant in Gyeongju: beef risotto at Midam Kitchen

In short

Midam Kitchen is a hanok-style Western restaurant in Hwangnidan-gil, Gyeongju. We shared pepperoni pizza, Toowoomba pasta, and beef risotto; the boldly seasoned, lightly spicy risotto was my favorite, though there is no private parking.

The two of us had Western food at Midam Kitchen (미담키친) on Gyeongju’s Hwangnidan-gil. Eating pasta and pizza in a hanok-style building felt unfamiliar at first, but once we sat down, it suited the lawn courtyard outside the window.

What are the courtyard and indoor atmosphere like at this hanok-style restaurant?

When you enter the hanok-style building, a lawn courtyard opens up in front of you. The courtyard was prettily arranged, making it a nice place to take photos.

Inside, I liked the interior and lighting. The hanok and lawn courtyard worked well together, and the cozy lighting made it easy to settle into conversation with the person I was with.

The green lawn courtyard outside the window kept catching my eye during the meal. The experience of eating Western food in a hanok, along with the relaxed atmosphere for conversation, suited a date or a meal while traveling.

The plates and lighting worked well together, so the food photos came out nicely too. With all three dishes, we could not finish the pizza and packed up the leftovers.

Why was the beef risotto my favorite of the three dishes?

The beef risotto was the dish I enjoyed most. It was fairly strongly seasoned, which suited my taste, and the beef was tender. The cream had a lightly spicy note, so it did not feel overly rich.

I also liked the texture: each grain of rice held its shape while mixing well with the cream sauce. Among the three dishes, the bold seasoning and spicy cream flavor stayed with me most.

Was the pepperoni pizza still good as takeout?

The pepperoni pizza was spicy, and the outer edge of the crust was baked crisp. It also had plenty of cheese on top.

We packed up the leftover pizza and ate it as a late-night snack at our accommodation. It was still enjoyable after it had cooled.

How were the seasoning and ingredients in the Toowoomba pasta?

The Toowoomba pasta was seasoned slightly more mildly than the beef risotto. Its creamy, slightly sweet sauce had a subtle smoky aroma.

It contained two large shrimp and several cocktail shrimp. There were also plenty of mushrooms and vegetables, which suited me because I like vegetables, and it was enjoyable to scoop them up with the sauce. The cream was rich without feeling heavy, so I finished it.
