Namdaemun peanut bread shop 2 min from Gamegol Wangmandu: Daesin

In short

Daesin Ttangkong-ppang Namdaemun Market branch (대신땅콩빵 남대문시장점) is a peanut bread shop at the entrance to Galchi Alley in Namdaemun Market, Jung-gu, Seoul, selling the famous snack from Daegu's Seomun Market. A 2-minute walk from Gamegol Wangmandu, the shop offered a sample: whole peanuts packed into each piece made the peanut bread nutty rather than dry, and a small jar of additive-free peanut butter came home too. The biggest draw of Daesin's Namdaemun Market branch is tasting Daegu's peanut bread without traveling to Daegu.

Daegu's Seomun Market peanut bread has come to Namdaemun Market

Daesin is a peanut bread shop famous as a tasty snack at Daegu's Seomun Market. Now that Namdaemun Market has become so hot lately, Daesin has opened a branch in Namdaemun Market too~~

Where is Daesin in Namdaemun Market, and how do you get there?

Daesin Ttangkong-ppang Namdaemun Market branch (대신땅콩빵) is a 2-minute walk from Gamegol Wangmandu (가메골왕만두). Namdaemun Market is confusing the first time you go, but if you go by landmarks, it's really easy.

From Gamegol Wangmandu, keep walking down toward Galchi Alley (cutlassfish alley) or the area packed with remodeled eyeglass shops. When you see Hyojason Mandu (효자손만두), famous for its fried dumplings and swarming with people, go up a little and you'll see Daesin.

If you're coming from the Galchi Alley side

Daesin's Namdaemun Market branch is at one of the entrances to Galchi Alley. There are several entrances, but if you're coming from Huirak Galchi (희락갈치), find the exit and go straight and you'll see it right away! It's at an entrance, so it's easy to find.

A lot of Namdaemun Market snack spots these days are deep-fried carb bombs, but Daesin's are made with peanuts, which are healthy..^^ Maybe that's why people passing by get drawn in by the nutty peanut smell and stop to wait.

People waiting for peanut bread in front of Daesin

They say Daesin is the only place in Korea that makes its own dough, and they also sell 100% peanut butter with no additives. These days in Namdaemun Market there are so many Japanese and Western tourists that you can't tell whether you're in Japan or Korea.

Paying at Daesin, and the samples

This Namdaemun Market snack shop takes both Onnuri vouchers and Zeropay! Peanut cookies~ you can try a sample before you buy~

Peanut bread sample corner at Daesin

There happened to be a sample out, so I tried one peanut bread, and it was nutty and delicious+_+ People passing by bought one each after trying a sample, too.

What does Daesin peanut bread taste like?

Daesin's peanut bread has real peanuts studded all through it. Like bread with cheese baked in, but with peanuts baked into peanut bread!

It's cute and tastes good too. The nuttiness of the peanuts gets doubled by eating the skins along with them, and plain peanuts can feel a bit dry, but eating them this way I think I end up eating more... It's not dry, it's nutty and delicious.

Peanut smoothie ₩2,500, but a 20-minute wait, so next time

The peanut smoothie at Daesin's Namdaemun Market branch is ₩2,500.

I wanted this peanut smoothie too.. but it wasn't cold yet, so I'd have to wait 20 minutes. I'll definitely try the peanut smoothie next time. The price is ₩2,500+_+

Buying a small jar of additive-free Daesin peanut butter

Daesin also sells additive-free peanut butter. I bought one in the small size. I think Daesin peanut butter is an item that lets you have a healthy breakfast without worrying about blood sugar, eaten with apple or toast.

Why peanut bread stands out as a Korean dessert

As a Korean dessert, peanut bread seems like something anyone can enjoy easily. Maybe the reason Korea's tornado potato is popular abroad is that there's no country in the world that doesn't eat potatoes, haha. And the reason tteokbokki (spicy rice cakes), a snack we're so used to, hasn't gone global is probably that people don't enjoy the chewy texture of rice cake, a carb bomb... Peanuts are an ingredient everyone enjoys, so peanut bread seems special!

Nutty peanut bread from Daesin in Namdaemun Market

A place that's so peanut-y... You don't have to go all the way to Daegu: the snack people queue for at Seomun Market, peanut bread, is easy to enjoy at Daesin in Namdaemun Market.

Namdaemun Market has plenty of great restaurants, but with snacks like this too, I think that's why people keep coming. No matter how much budget gets spent on "saving traditional markets," a market people come to on their own two feet ends up developing by itself in the end...... That day the merchants (Sangin) said a famous singer had come to film for YouTube, and last time I saw a famous chef too, haha. The reason YouTube and TV stations keep visiting must be that there's so much content people find fun.

Namdaemun Market, a Korean traditional market that can't be compared to Bangkok's Chatuchak Market or Tokyo's Tsukiji Market!! Today was fun and delicious again. I'm going back again..
