Hwajeong-dong family lunch seating split at Min Cook Misoyaki

In short

Min Cook Misoyaki is a Japanese grilled fish and rice bowl restaurant near Hwajeong Station in Goyang, Gyeonggi, run by the 23-year veteran brand Min Cook Dashima. A family of four visited for weekend lunch and, because the store is built mostly around bar seating, split across two 2-person tables facing front and back to eat extra-large grilled miso mackerel, sake-don, and Korean pork tonkatsu. Knowing the seating layout ahead of time makes this a satisfying weekend meal spot for families with kids.

Fit for a family of four? A store built mostly around bar seating

We visited during Saturday lunch, and once inside, the white-and-wood interior gave off a bright yet cozy feel with real Japanese local ambiance.

The interior is mostly bar-style seating, with only about 4 compact two-person tables. If three or more people visit, the layout means you either sit in a row at the bar or split up separately. Since we were a family of four, we split across two 2-person tables, sitting front and back, and had a cozy meal that way.

With its open kitchen layout, it looked like a great spot for solo diners to sit at the bar and watch the cooking while they eat. Even though we ended up split across two tables, the whole space felt clean and relaxed enough to enjoy without any stress. The bar had neat side dishes ready to go, like pickled radish and stir-fried kimchi. Ordering was convenient too — you scan a QR code at your seat and pick your menu through a simple smart system.

What we ordered and an honest verdict on the taste

There were plenty of options: salt-grilled fish, miso-grilled fish, rice bowls, and tonkatsu. We ordered a good mix — extra-large grilled miso mackerel (half a fish), sake-don (raw salmon rice bowl), rice (1 regular, 1 large), and Korean pork tonkatsu. We ordered via QR, and you can choose your rice portion size when ordering, so pick whatever suits you.

Pre-meal starters (porridge & broth)

🥣 Not long after ordering, warm porridge arrived first. It was savory with deep flavor, gently filling our empty stomachs and perfect for waking up the appetite. The kids ate it happily too, which put us in a good mood right from the start, and the clean, refreshing broth that followed was great for wetting the throat.

Extra-large grilled miso mackerel

🐟 True to its name, the mackerel had plump, meaty flesh worth every bit of picking apart. The subtle miso flavor soaked all the way into the fish, seasoned just right and salty enough that we never needed to dip it in soy sauce. Crispy outside, moist inside, with absolutely no fishy smell. Our second kid, who'd ordered the tonkatsu, took one bite of this and declared that next time they'd definitely order the mackerel themselves!

Korean pork tonkatsu

🥩 Made with thick, quality Korean pork, this tonkatsu was the real deal for a crispy-outside, juicy-inside texture. The breading was crunchy and the inside was rich with juice, moist and tender — a flavor that both kids and adults could enjoy without complaint.

Sake-don (raw salmon rice bowl)

🍣 We ordered this for our first kid, who loves salmon. The visibly fresh raw salmon was piled on generously in big, thick slices, catching the eye right away. Piled thick on rice mixed with a savory-salty sauce, one big bite just melted in the mouth. The portion was generous too, and our salmon-obsessed oldest cleared the entire bowl without leaving a single grain behind — total satisfaction.

Side salad

🥗 The mackerel and tonkatsu dishes both came with a fresh side salad. The crunchy cabbage, tangy-sweet dressing, and tomato combination refreshed the palate that could otherwise get greasy, letting us enjoy the meal to the very end.

Final verdict — how was it for a weekend family meal

💡 The food overall came out neatly and cleanly plated, which really made us feel well taken care of. The kids ate happily, and as parents, we could really taste the freshness of carefully chosen ingredients — a genuinely satisfying weekend lunch outing. If we come back, I'd love to work through the other menu items we haven't tried yet, one by one. ✨
