Gapyeong dakgalbi restaurant with doenjang-jjigae: Dami Seorak

In short

Dami Seorak Charcoal-grilled Dakgalbi (다미설악숯불닭갈비) is a charcoal-grilled dakgalbi (spicy grilled chicken) restaurant on Hanseo-ro in Seorak-myeon, Gapyeong, Gyeonggi. Arriving almost right at the 10:00 opening, we ordered half-and-half dakgalbi for two plus dessert mul-makguksu (cold buckwheat noodles in broth), doenjang-jjigae and a bowl of rice, and a staff member grilled the pre-seared chicken golden and cut it into bite-sized pieces at the table. Dami Seorak serves a generous spread of side dishes, and the deodeok (bellflower root) and chive salad with the chicken was the best combination of the meal.

Dami Seorak Charcoal-grilled Dakgalbi: hours and parking

Dami Seorak Charcoal-grilled Dakgalbi is open daily from 10:00 to 21:00 and has parking available. It's on Hanseo-ro in Seorak-myeon, Gapyeong-gun, Gyeonggi, so it's an easy stop on a Gapyeong trip.

You can't skip dakgalbi on a Gapyeong trip, right? That's how we ended up at Dami Seorak Charcoal-grilled Dakgalbi!

There's a big parking lot out front, so it's easy to use — it's shared with other stores, so it's even bigger!

There are baby chairs near the entrance, and a really big restroom inside too.

The interior was huge. I guess since so many people come for dakgalbi at lunch and dinner, the place is really spacious~ We ended up visiting almost right at opening.

Ordering at the kiosk: half-and-half dakgalbi for two

You order by kiosk at Dami Seorak Charcoal-grilled Dakgalbi. There's a menu board hanging up, but it's slightly different from the kiosk, so it's better to check the kiosk. We ordered half-and-half dakgalbi for two, dessert mul-makguksu, and doenjang-jjigae with rice.

There was also a sign about how to enjoy charcoal dakgalbi the best way, and a Naver review event. Worth checking out!

How many side dishes does Dami Seorak serve?

Once we ordered, the banchan (side dishes) came out and it was amazing. This was the first dakgalbi place I'd seen with such a wide and abundant variety of side dishes! They said some were made from vegetables they grow themselves~ The eggplant salad and deodeok (bellflower root) were seriously delicious!!!

Staff grill the charcoal half-and-half dakgalbi for you

Next came the half-and-half dakgalbi for two. It's half soy sauce, half spicy marinade, so it's great when you want to taste both flavors. Staff grilled it to a nice golden brown. It comes pre-seared, so it just needs a little more grilling.

Once it was mostly cooked through, staff cut it into easy-to-eat pieces! Just looking at the photos makes it look so appetizing, doesn't it…?

Dessert mul-makguksu and Kim Jubu doenjang-jjigae

While the dakgalbi was grilling to golden brown, the dessert mul-makguksu I ordered arrived. I don't usually eat makguksu (buckwheat cold noodles), but that day I found myself craving a cool mul-makguksu?? haha. The broth was so refreshing, exactly my style! Since it was the dessert-size mul-makguksu, the portion was just right too. Regular makguksu comes in a hefty portion, so I'd recommend the dessert-size one as a pairing with dakgalbi~

This is Kim Jubu's doenjang-jjigae (soybean paste stew)! The hearty doenjang-jjigae was delicious too. It was packed with tofu and zucchini, so it was great.

Finally, it's grilled to a golden brown and ready to eat~~

Soy sauce or spicy marinade: which dakgalbi tastes better?

We ate both the soy sauce and the spicy marinade, and both were so good. The spicy version isn't overly spicy, so it's easy to enjoy a moderate kick. It's not spicy at all, just enough difference from the soy sauce version…? The soy sauce one tastes less like soy sauce specifically and more like the original flavor.

Staff recommended eating it together with the deodeok and chive salad that came out with it! Wow, I don't usually like deodeok, but it really paired well~ Since they recommended the deodeok salad, chive salad, and perilla leaves, be sure to try them together. So delicious.

So we wrapped it all up in a lettuce wrap with everything they said was good lol. It's also great rolled up in perilla leaves~~

Of course, we finished by picking up the bones and gnawing on them. The meat stuck to the bone is seriously delicious lol. There's not a ton of meat left on them, but it's still fun to pick at those dakgalbi bones~

Is Dami Seorak worth a stop on a Gapyeong trip?

If you go on a Gapyeong trip, you absolutely must eat charcoal dakgalbi! They serve a neat, wide variety of banchan, and every single one is delicious. This was the first dakgalbi place I've been to with such a great banchan spread.

  • Order the half-and-half dakgalbi to taste both spicy marinade and soy sauce at once
  • Charcoal-grilled so it's crispy outside, juicy inside
  • Recommend pairing with deodeok salad, chive salad, and perilla leaves
  • Skip the large regular makguksu and go for the dessert-size mul-makguksu instead

I've eaten dakgalbi at many places, but the charcoal dakgalbi here was genuinely delicious! If you're heading to Gapyeong, why not stop by Dami Seorak Charcoal-grilled Dakgalbi for dakgalbi grilled over gentle charcoal~?!
