The weather was so lovely that, on my way home after cycling from Bulgwangcheon to Haneul Park one weekend afternoon, I stopped by Mapo Gui Madang Bukgajwa Direct Branch (마포구이마당 북가좌직영점), near Jeungsan Station. There are plenty of dishes to enjoy alongside the meat, and the pre-grilled meat is delicious—so let me introduce this place in detail!

Mapo Gui Madang, a Korean barbecue restaurant in Bukgajwa-dong, is a 10-minute walk from both Jeungsan Station and Digital Media City Station.

Is parking available?

There is room for around three cars beside the restaurant. If spaces are unavailable, please use a nearby public parking lot.

A comfortable interior for get-togethers and team dinners

I arrived right as the restaurant opened, so I was able to photograph the whole space. With neatly arranged tables and grills lined up nicely, it would be great for a gathering or company dinner, right?

When I stepped inside, the first thing I noticed was how much larger and roomier it was than I expected. The tables were spaced comfortably apart, making it easy to chat over a meal, and the whole place felt clean and orderly.

Round tables and comfortable chairs made it a nice setting to grill meat with friends or family. One side of the restaurant displayed the menu and added that warm, familiar feel unique to a Korean barbecue spot, making it easy to drop in without any fuss.

Natural light streamed through the large windows, so the interior felt bright and open. Rather than overly formal, it was a space that suited the idea of enjoying delicious meat comfortably at a Bukgajwa-dong Korean barbecue restaurant.

Ordering pre-grilled whole pork belly and makchang

What we ordered

  • 2 servings of whole pork belly
  • 1 serving of makchang
  • Doenjang-jjigae and soju
Order of whole pork belly and makchang

A pork belly specialty restaurant where the meat is deliciously pre-grilled over Chiaksan charcoal, then sizzles away on a natural-stone grill.

Once you order, the staff first grill the food deliciously for you. And then~ they cut up the thick whole pork belly on the well-heated grill and cooked it again for us.

And then~ they grilled the green-onion kimchi and kimchi too, both of which were so delicious even on their own.

I also ordered delicious doenjang-jjigae (soybean-paste stew), which is a must when eating meat~ After a while, you start craving something hot and brothy, you know~

If you like the pairing of whole pork belly and green-onion kimchi, I recommend eating them together too ^^ My husband, who does not usually eat much green-onion kimchi, kept eating it with the meat, saying it was delicious~^^

Golden-grilled makchang and the house special sauce

I ordered makchang because pork belly alone felt like it would be a shame~ The makchang also arrives pre-grilled, then gets another turn on the grill.

Pre-grilled makchang cooking again on the grill

Makchang has that wonderfully chewy bite of its own, and when it is grilled until golden, a savory flavor really comes through.

The nicely golden-grilled makchang is even more delicious when dipped in Mapo Gui Madang's house special sauce.
