This past weekend, we went on a day trip to Gangneung for some sea fishing, which our sons absolutely love!
For breakfast-slash-lunch, we stopped by Jeong Eunsuk Chodang Sundubu, a local favorite in Gangneung, for sundubu jeongsik (soft tofu stew set) and bossam (boiled pork wraps). Then before mackerel fishing, we swung by the Jumunjin Marine Museum, Gangwon Sikjaemart Jumunjin branch, and finally Minja Hoetjip near the Jumunjin fish market to pack some sashimi.
Where is Minja Hoetjip, and where do you park?
Minja Hoetjip, a takeout and delivery specialist for red crab, snow crab, king crab and sashimi, sits across from the Jumunjin Coastal Parking Tower, tucked inside the 80-year-old fish market. Parking there gets you a parking ticket subsidy, so it's convenient, and there's a lottery shop nearby too, so you can grab a lotto ticket while you're at it haha!
Sashimi takeout prices at Minja Hoetjip and what comes free
Minja Hoetjip also takes delivery app orders, and sashimi takeout starts at ₩40,000 for small, ₩60,000 for medium, and ₩80,000 for large ^^ Takeout orders come with free abalone, sea squirt, whelk, steamed shrimp, lettuce wraps, chojang sauce and wasabi sauce, and they'll pack fish stew ingredients too if you need them! They don't charge extra for vegetables or sauce and the sashimi prices are reasonable, so it's popular.
How was the ₩50,000 star flounder and olive flounder takeout?
I asked the owner for ₩50,000 worth of flounder and star flounder! I also asked about squid sashimi prices since I wanted to try some — one large squid for ₩15,000! That was actually pretty cheap for squid these days ~^^
Ahh... with the fishing boats out, plenty of anglers around, and that cool sea breeze — a plate of sashimi with a beer! Haha! Flounder is one of the sashimi fish Koreans love most and it's also widely used for sushi! They say spring flounder is the best, but honestly I think it's delicious any time of year ~^^ Chewy and so fresh ~~~
Don't even get me started on the whelk and steamed shrimp! I had some in Wonju recently and maybe because it was in season, both the grilled shrimp and the raw shrimp sashimi were delicious ~^^ The sea squirt had that real ocean flavor too 👍👍👍 The abalone was top-notch as well. With such a huge menu and a spacious dining room, this place is perfect for group gatherings, tour bus visitors, local Jumunjin get-togethers, or just a nice meal out 🩷 The gaebul (spoon worm) and sea cucumber looked delicious too 😭
Why Minja Hoetjip works well with kids
Minja Hoetjip doesn't charge for the table setting, fish stew, or crab steaming, and grilled fish, fried food, sushi and assorted seafood come free as extras. Order crab and you get fried rice + stew, or red crab ramyeon, free! With grilled and fried fish that kids can eat too, I'd highly recommend this place for a Jumunjin trip with kids and parents 😉💯 We often stay at the Benikea Hotel in Jumunjin, so next time I'll order delivery or grab takeout again 🧡🧡🧡
Sea fishing in Jumunjin after picking up the sashimi
Yesterday while sea fishing, our sons got a real taste of the catch! First round was a redlip mullet, second round was a black porgy and a crab, two for one, haha! We released everything, but it was so much fun! We'd originally planned to fish for mackerel at Geumjin Port, but some people said they were biting and others said they weren't, so I'll need to get more solid info before heading back ^^ How about a Gangneung trip with some fishing and delicious sashimi and crab from Minja Hoetjip in Jumunjin ~~~^^
