Hwarodam Yang Kkochi Magok is on the 2nd floor of the Queens Park building, and even the exterior gave off such a high-end vibe!

Book ahead at Hwarodam and skip the wait

There was a long list of reservation names at the entrance — looks like everyone books ahead before visiting! We also made a reservation since Hwarodam is so popular, haha. Because we booked ahead, there was no waiting at all, which was great.

You order via the tablet, and there were more side menu options than I expected, so we spent a while deciding what to get, haha. But the guo bao rou, famous for being delicious here, was a must!!

What comes in the whole-lamb skewer set

What we ordered was Hwarodam's yang-han-mari skewer set — a combination with sirloin, thick-cut, and rib meat skewers. Being kind of an analog person, I actually like a paper menu like this more than the tablet, haha.

Another strength of Hwarodam might be its big tables. The tables were generously wide, so I had zero worries about table space while ordering!

Mala gungchae, the side dish worth refilling

The basic table setting arrived, and that mala-flavored gungchae (aster scaber greens)... it's a magic trick. We refilled it before our ordered food even came out, haha. I normally don't even like plain gungchae, but mala gungchae?! So novel and so delicious!

You can request extra side dishes through the tablet too, which was so convenient and nice, haha. I always feel a bit sorry asking for extra side dishes in person, but requesting through the tablet made me feel a lot more at ease, ha.

Three house sauces: why the secret soy sauce wins

Three house sauces come with the meal — chive flower sauce, secret soy sauce, and silk road sauce — and my top pick is the secret soy sauce!! Piling the pickled chili on top of it made it soooo delicious! My husband's top pick was the chive flower sauce, haha. We ended up stealing each other's sauce, haha.

Grilling order tip: save the rib meat for last

The skewers we ordered came out, and I'd never seen lamb skewers this substantial!! The skewers were thick and generous in portion. You know how most lamb skewer places thaw out frozen meat and serve that? Just look at this place. How do they serve meat this thick and plump and high-quality...!!

The thick-cut lamb especially was so thick that anyone would recognize it as the thick-cut skewer, haha. A pro tip when grilling: grill the rib meat last~~! If you put the rib meat on first, you'll get a dramatic fire show, so watch out, haha.

Lamb skewers grilling over the charcoal fire

A faint, fragrant charcoal aroma with none of that gamey or off smell — just the clean, natural flavor of the lamb itself! The quality is so good you could enjoy it deliciously without even dipping it in sauce!

Is the small guo bao rou enough for two?

The guo bao rou I'd been looking forward to..!! This is genuinely so good, everyone. Please don't let anyone go without trying it. We ordered the small size and it was still a pretty generous amount — plenty for two people.

The small-size order of guo bao rou

The guo bao rou was seriously mind-blowing... crispy outside, moist sauce, and the sauce wasn't overdone either — just the right seasoning for a delicious guo bao rou!! The batter wasn't too thick either, so it was extra delicious.

Crispy eggplant in a sweet and spicy sauce

Crispy eggplant, and why we're going back to Hwarodam

The crispy eggplant was also listed as a best menu item on the board, so I tried it — crispy outside but very tender when you bite in! The salty, sweet-and-spicy sauce soaked thinly into the surface, and it seemed like it'd make a great beer snack too!

I'm planning to bring my parents back for this Chuseok, haha. They're open during Chuseok except for September 25–26! If you're looking for a Balsan or Magok favorite, a lamb skewer favorite, I fully recommend Hwarodam Yang Kkochi!!
