Busan sushi restaurant with salmon salad and plum wine: Moshi Moshi

If you attended Pusan National University, you have probably been brought to Moshi Moshi by an upperclassman at least once. When I started having juniors of my own and wondered what I should buy them, Moshi Moshi was always on the shortlist. Now that I am back in graduate school, I finally visited Moshi Moshi again after a long time. It is a sushi restaurant with well-put-together, good-value meals for both lunch and dinner. I went here so many times as an undergraduate that I could not possibly count them all.

The address is Moshi Moshi, 1F, 271-5 Geumgang-ro, Geumjeong-gu, Busan, South Korea. Hours are 11:00–21:30, with a break from 15:00–16:30 except on weekends. There is one hour of parking support at the lot next door, high chairs, set menus, and Kirin draft beer—and I recommend the house-made plum wine.

If you are taking public transportation, I absolutely recommend using the shuttle bus from Pusan National University Station.

With its open kitchen, generously spaced tables, and warm, cozy wood-toned interior, it was easy to settle in for a meal. We ordered Set 3 (16 pieces of sushi + salmon salad + memil), karaage, Kirin draft beer, house-made plum wine (highly recommended!), and Zero Cola. Moshi Moshi puts together its sets so well that I definitely recommend ordering one for dinner.

Set 3 starters and salmon salad

These are the complimentary starters before the food arrives. There is a sesame-dressing tofu salad, which is kind of Moshi Moshi's signature? plus a regular salad. Both can be refilled!

First, the salmon salad arrived. Moshi Moshi is clearly especially good with salmon and flounder. The dressing goes wonderfully with the salmon, and I do not know why they tucked it underneath, but the salmon was cut into incredibly long slices—about twice the length shown in this photo.

Kirin draft beer and the 16-piece sushi set

Once I saw the Kirin draft beer logo, I could not not order it. It was exactly as delicious as Kirin should be. I was going to order another glass, but a fascinating drink came later, so I had just one Kirin today.

Here are the 16 pieces of sushi. The assortment included flounder, salmon, tuna, shrimp, eel, chashu (braised pork), and more. For sushi in a set, both the portion and selection were great.

My favorite pieces were the flounder engawa (fin meat) and salmon. We happened to be seated right beside the flounder tank, so perhaps watching the fish move as I ate made them seem even fresher.

Memil and crispy house-made karaage

The set includes one noodle dish, and I absolutely recommend the memil. The tsuyu dipping broth immediately tasted unlike bottled tsuyu. I was a little surprised when I first tasted the broth.

I also loved the thoughtful touch of adding ice so the noodles would not go soft.

The chicken karaage we ordered separately had such deliciously crisp coating. I accidentally dropped one piece into the memil midway through, but it was so crisp and tasty that it still kept a bit of its crunch even afterward.

House-made plum wine mixed with water

This is the house-made plum wine that I strongly, strongly recommend ordering. It was a little sweet for me personally, so I mixed it with water, and adjusting the strength that way made it seriously delicious. If I had ordered this from the start, I think I would have had three glasses of it alone.

From lunchtime sushi to an evening drink

Moshi Moshi does not sell only sushi; it also offers salmon salad, chashu, fried shrimp, memil, udon, ramen, and a range of dishes to have with drinks. It is one of the best restaurants in Busan for everything from a simple sushi lunch to an evening drink, with sets that let you enjoy a variety of dishes. I used to come here constantly as an undergraduate and returned for the first time in ages—sure enough, it is still a delicious sushi restaurant. Pusan National University students, I recommend visiting at least once.
