A green terrace café in the middle of Gangnam worth recommending: Upper and Under

While looking for a good-vibe café near Gangnam Station, I ended up at Upper and Under, a café near Sinnonhyeon Station. The terrace surrounded by huge trees was really pretty, and the showcase was packed with all kinds of desserts. Raspberry cake, fig desserts, americano, einspänner, mango bar sherbet latte — let me walk through the menu, prices, and the overall vibe.

Heading into the alley off Gangnam-daero, I spotted a striking building next to a huge tree, so it wasn't hard to find.

The two-story house exterior of Upper and Under

The first thing that caught my eye when I arrived at Upper and Under was the building and the massive tree. Instead of being tucked into a typical commercial building, it has this unique two-story house-like exterior that gives off a completely different vibe.

It's structured across the basement and 2nd floor like a two-story house. Brick and white-toned walls blend naturally with the old tree, and it all flows into the outdoor terrace. The clean UPPER AND UNDER sign at the entrance made for a good photo too.

What is the interior of Upper and Under like?

Once inside, the space felt bigger than I expected. It's mostly white-toned with brick and wood mixed in, and the mood shifted slightly by floor and area.

The big windows let you see the trees outside directly, so even indoors you get that green feeling. There were quite a lot of guests when I visited — enough to make it obvious this is already a popular spot in Gangnam.

My favorite space at Upper and Under was the terrace. Huge trees surround the building, so sitting on the terrace, you almost forget you're in the middle of Gangnam.

Sunlight filters through the trees, and outdoor tables are set up throughout, making it great to use on a nice day. We had our drinks and desserts on the terrace, and with the green trees as a backdrop, the food photos turned out really pretty. If you're looking for a café with a pretty terrace near Gangnam or Sinnonhyeon Station, this is probably one of Upper and Under's biggest draws.

Upper and Under isn't just about the space — the dessert lineup is quite extensive too. Financiers, canelés, pies, and Basque cheesecake were all there, and a separate showcase held the cakes.

Among the items I saw during my visit were

What we ordered at Upper and Under, and what it cost

That day, we ordered americano, einspänner, and mango bar sherbet latte, plus raspberry cake and a fig dessert. Americano was ₩6,500, einspänner ₩8,000, mango bar sherbet latte ₩9,000, raspberry cake ₩8,500, and fig pie ₩8,300.

Laid out together on the terrace table, the colors of raspberry, fig, and mango all came together to make everything look even prettier.

The pink raspberry cake stood out right away with raspberries piled on top. The fig dessert we ordered alongside it was loaded with fresh figs — the kind of menu that would catch the eye of anyone who loves fruit.

Both weren't just pretty to look at — they tasted great too. With such a wide dessert lineup, I'd love to try other options next time.

Americano, einspänner and mango bar sherbet latte

For drinks, we ordered americano, einspänner, and mango bar sherbet latte. The americano paired well with the desserts, and the einspänner looked great with its generous cream on top.

The most unique of the three was the mango bar sherbet latte — with yellow mango sherbet and a mango bar on top, it stood out visually right away. All three drinks were satisfying and paired well with the desserts.

Is Upper and Under worth a visit?

Upper and Under was a Gangnam café where I got to enjoy a pretty space alongside a wide dessert selection. What stuck with me most was the outdoor terrace, built around the huge tree left just as it was.
