Jongno 3-ga takeout bakery with a salt bread receipt event: Munhwa
In short
Munhwa Bakery is a takeout-only neighborhood bakery on Donhwamun-ro in Jongno 3-ga, Seoul, open 11:00 to 19:00. Drawn in by the smell of baking, the writer bought garlic baguette, onion bagel and mugwort rice cake bread, and at the time of the visit Munhwa Bakery was giving out salt bread to anyone who wrote a receipt review. The mugwort rice cake bread, picked with no expectations, was the surprise favorite, while the garlic baguette is best eaten right after you buy it.

Hi, this is Muneo :) I was in the Jongno 3-ga area when the smell of bread pulled me into Munhwa Bakery (문화제빵), a bakery near Jongno 3-ga. I only meant to grab a few things again, but it ended up being way tastier than expected — very satisfying!
Munhwa Bakery hours and what the shop is like
Munhwa Bakery is at 65 Donhwamun-ro, 1st floor, Jongno-gu, Seoul, open 11:00-19:00. It's not a flashy, decked-out large bakery — more of a neighborhood bakery you can casually pop into while passing by and grab some good bread to go.

You can tell it's a bakery from the outside right away, which is exactly how the smell caught me while walking through Jongno 3-ga haha! This place is takeout only, not a sit-and-eat café — you pick your bread and pack it up to go.

It's a cozy shop with the bread on display — you go in, pick what you want, order, and they pack it right away! Each piece of bread is individually wrapped so nothing mixes together, which made carrying it home really convenient.
What bread does Munhwa Bakery sell?
Munhwa Bakery had a surprisingly wide variety of bread! And best of all, the prices weren't a burden at all. At bakeries these days the total adds up fast even with just a few picks, but here you can try a bunch of different kinds without feeling guilty about it. And the loaves are big too!

When I visited, they had garlic bread, walnut bread, rice-chestnut loaf, rice-cheese loaf, white red bean bread, maple cream cheese bread, onion bagel, sweet potato bread, cheese bread, squid ink condensed milk bread, milk cream bread, black sesame bread, injeolmi (sweet rice cake) bread, peanut bread, and more.

From plain rice bread that's simple to eat, to sweeter breads filled with cream or red bean paste, to bagels — there's something for every taste.

How to get free salt bread with a receipt review

When I visited, Munhwa Bakery was also running a receipt-review event. Write a receipt review and you get a free salt bread! If you're planning to buy some bread, it's worth checking whether an event like this is running :)
Taste notes on the three breads bought at Munhwa Bakery
I ended up buying three kinds!

Garlic baguette, onion bagel, and mugwort rice cake bread!

1. Mugwort rice cake bread (ssuktteok-ppang) — the best of the three
A bread where the subtle scent of mugwort meets chewy rice cake! I'd recommend this to anyone who likes mugwort or rice cake. Honestly, I didn't pick this expecting it to be the best menu item, but the moment I bit in I thought, "wait, this is actually really good?" There's a gentle mugwort aroma throughout, and the rice cake inside is so chewy — it was genuinely delicious. Best of all, it's not just sweet — the subtle mugwort flavor plus the chewiness of the rice cake is the best part!
2. Garlic baguette — eat it right away
Packed with garlic, and eaten right away it's so moist and delicious... If you're not sure what to pick at Munhwa Bakery, the garlic baguette is one I really want to recommend. The baguette's plain, chewy texture paired with the rich, savory garlic flavor was so good! You can really taste that sweet-salty garlic bread flavor too, so one bite and you keep reaching for more, ugh. Oh, and most importantly — I strongly recommend eating it right after you buy it!!
3. Onion bagel
A chewy bagel with a subtle onion flavor added — plain but keeps you coming back for more! The gentle onion scent plus the soft, savory cream cheese made it plain in the best way and really tasty!

What to order on a second visit to Munhwa Bakery
All three were delicious, but if I visit again, I'd definitely grab the garlic baguette and mugwort rice cake bread again!!!! If you visit Munhwa Bakery in Jongno 3-ga, make sure to try these two :) Even if you don't eat it the same day, warming it up briefly in an air fryer at home makes it taste even better!
