Teppan restaurant in Yeonnam-dong: 150g scallop add-on at Gusa Yeonnam

In short

Gusa Yeonnam is a teppan (iron-griddle) Japanese restaurant on the basement level of Yeontral Tower in Yeonnam-dong, Seoul, near Hongik University Station. The signature 2-person set is 66,000 won, and adding 150g of scallops for 9,000 won brought the bill to 75,000 won, eaten at the counter seats right in front of the griddle — the scallops, nutty outside and soft inside, were more memorable than the wagyu skirt steak or the black tiger shrimp. With the torch fire show to watch, Gusa Yeonnam works well as a slow-paced Yeonnam-dong date spot.

I was looking for somewhere in Yeonnam-dong where I could watch the cooking process instead of just eating, so I went for teppan food. This time I visited Gusa Yeonnam. There were table seats too, but since I came to a teppan restaurant, I picked the counter seats right in front of the grill so I could actually watch the cooking.

Spoiler: I was glad I sat at the counter. I even got to watch a fire show while the meat was grilling, so the wait for the food was pretty entertaining.

Where do you park at Gusa Yeonnam?

Parking information at Gusa Yeonnam

If you're driving, I'd recommend checking parking ahead of time. When I went, there was space for about two cars in front of the restaurant, but it was a single-file layout that looked hard to park in comfortably. The restaurant itself also suggests using nearby parking lots, so I felt it was easier to just look up a nearby lot before heading over.

Signature 2-person set at 66,000 won, 75,000 won with the scallops

Signature 2-person set ₩66,000 / ₩33,000 per person

I ordered the signature 2-person set for ₩66,000, which comes to about ₩33,000 per person for two people. I added 150g of scallops for ₩9,000 on top, bringing the total to ₩75,000. I received ₩45,000 in sponsorship support and paid the remaining ₩30,000 myself. Here's what my set included.

Signature 2-person set lineup

  • Wagyu MB9 skirt steak (medium well)
  • Classic yakisoba
  • Gusa okonomiyaki
  • Black tiger shrimp
  • + 150g scallop add-on
Basic salad and barley tea served at the start

Once you sit down, they bring out a basic salad and barley tea. The vegetables were fresh and crunchy — delicious.

Counter seats or table seats at Gusa Yeonnam? Take the counter your first time

There are table seats too, but if it's your first time at Gusa Yeonnam, I'd personally recommend trying the counter seats once. Watching the food get made right on the teppan makes the whole meal a bit more fun.

The teppan and safety glass panel seen from the counter seats

There's a glass panel in front of the grill for safety. It shows up in photos as a reflection, but it also keeps the heat from blasting straight at you, which is nice.

Came for the black tiger shrimp, left thinking the scallop add-on was the best call

Bean sprouts, black tiger shrimp, scallops, and meat on the teppan

On the grill, seasoned bean sprouts went down first, followed by the black tiger shrimp, scallops, and meat in turn.

While I was eating the salad and waiting for the meat, I got to watch a torch fire show.

Torch fire show on the teppan

It wasn't just a one-second flash — it went on for about 1–2 minutes, so there was plenty of time to get a photo.

Meat on the teppan after the fire show

The meat came out exactly at the doneness I asked for and was really tender. Since it's grilled straight on the teppan, it paired well with the bean sprouts, and there was a generous amount of sprouts, so it was more filling than I expected.

Then the black tiger shrimp I'd been curious about. I'd always wondered about it after seeing people on YouTube eating those big black tiger shrimp, and eating it for real, the meat was quite plump and springy.

Black tiger shrimp with sauce drizzled on top

It paired well with the sauce drizzled on top, and personally the texture felt more like actual shellfish than regular shrimp — it gave me the same satisfaction as eating snow crab or blue crab.

The head part had a rich flavor too, so if you're into that, you can enjoy it all the way through.

150g scallop add-on grilled on the teppan

But the biggest surprise of the day was something else entirely.

Scallops

The 150g add-on was ₩9,000, and I got roughly 10 pieces for that. I was really glad I added it. Seared crisp on the outside by the teppan and soft inside, the scallops actually stuck with me more than the shrimp I'd originally been looking forward to. Eating the meat, shrimp, and scallops together at once was amazing in both texture and flavor.

Classic yakisoba and a thick Gusa okonomiyaki to finish

Classic yakisoba topped with a soft-boiled egg

Then the classic yakisoba. The egg on top was cooked to just the right soft-boiled degree, and there was plenty of shrimp and meat inside — the shrimp especially was really springy. With mayonnaise added, the savory saltiness really came through, and it went well alongside the teppan dishes.

Last up, the Gusa okonomiyaki (savory Japanese pancake). Unlike the okonomiyaki I usually see, the first thing I noticed was that it didn't have bonito flakes on top. It was also thicker than I expected — not the thin, crispy style, but more like something between a Korean savory pancake and a pancake, thick and substantial inside.

Thick Gusa okonomiyaki

Overall, Gusa Yeonnam felt like a good place to eat slowly while watching food get grilled right in front of you. If you're on a Yeonnam-dong date and looking for a meal that's more fun to watch than an ordinary one, this could be a great fit. If you added one more thing to the 2-person set, would you go for scallops, or another teppan dish?
