A special drink in a hidden space behind a bookshelf 🍸 Today I'm introducing Bitters, a bar with a bit of a different vibe that I found while looking for somewhere special in Hongdae.
Hongdae has no shortage of bars, but that day I wasn't looking for somewhere loud — I wanted a place to sit and enjoy a cocktail with some atmosphere. Bitters runs on a speakeasy bar concept, so it felt different from a typical cocktail bar the moment I stepped in. It also has signature cocktails inspired by books, which made browsing the menu genuinely fun 🍸📖
Where is Bitters, and what are its hours?
Bitters is on B1 of the Podo Building, 3-30 Hongik-ro, Mapo-gu, Seoul. It's about a 10-minute walk from Exit 9 of Hongik Univ. Station, and it's open daily from 19:00 to 02:00, with last order at 01:30.

Being within walking distance of Hongik Univ. Station makes it a solid pick for a second round after dinner. That said, the entrance can be tricky to find on a first visit! True to the speakeasy concept, the entrance is a distinctive bookshelf door, so if you're expecting a normal bar entrance, you might wander a bit.
The bookshelf door: how to get into Bitters
The first thing that caught my eye at Bitters was, of course, the bookshelf-concept entrance.

At a glance it looks like an ordinary bookshelf, but you open it in this bar's own particular way, which made it fun from the very start. Heading down from the busy Hongdae streets to the basement level, the mood shifts completely!

So true to its name, it felt like stepping into a hidden hideout. Once inside, the space is bigger than expected, and thanks to the high ceilings and soft lighting, it never feels cramped. There are both bar seats and table seats, so it works whether you're coming solo, on a date, or with friends.

What kind of bar is Bitters?
Bitters is a speakeasy bar where you can enjoy not just cocktails but a range of whisky and wine too.

What stands out most are the signature cocktails inspired by books and seasonal ingredients. What I found fun while looking over the menu was that each cocktail isn't just listed with a name and ingredients — it's mapped out so you can see its flavor and aroma profile at a glance.

Looking at the photos I took of the menu, each cocktail comes with an illustration plus readings for aroma, sweetness, acidity, and creaminess, making it easy even for a first-time visitor to choose. And every cocktail on the menu is priced at ₩22,000.

The four cocktails we ordered at Bitters
Pinklet, ₩22,000
First up was the Pinklet! Made with gin, marshmallow, vanilla, raspberry, and strawberry jam.

The pink illustration on the menu caught my eye right away, and the actual drink's color was just as pretty, great for photos 💗 It's gin-based with marshmallow, vanilla, raspberry, and strawberry jam, so if you like sweet and smooth drinks, this one's worth a look. The menu labeled it Sweet / Fruity / Nutty / Creamy, so I had a rough idea what to expect before ordering. And with a glass this pretty, photographing it next to the menu really brought out the atmosphere 📸
Godfather, ₩22,000
Second was the Godfather, exactly my kind of drink! Scotch whisky, amaretto, Pedro Ximénez sherry, and bitters.

It's a cocktail with scotch whisky, amaretto, Pedro Ximénez sherry, and bitters. The menu described it as Sweet / Strong / Aromatic / Nutty.

As you can see in the photo, it came in a clear glass over ice with a deep amber color, and the mood was excellent. If you're into whisky-based cocktails, this is one to check out 🥃
Revolver, ₩21,000
Third up was the Revolver!

It had a different feel from the cocktails we'd had before, and I liked that Bitters offers plenty of classic cocktails alongside its signatures.
Don Locke Wood, ₩23,000

Lastly, we ordered the Don Locke Wood for ₩23,000. Bitters also has a wide selection of whiskies beyond its cocktails, so it works well if one person wants a cocktail and the other wants whisky.
What the atmosphere at Bitters feels like
My photos probably capture the mood at Bitters better than I can describe. Overall it's dim, upscale lighting + classic interior + jazz music, quite different from Hongdae's noisier bars. Watching the bartender make cocktails up close at the bar is also a fun point for anyone who loves bars. It's good for a slow conversation on a date, and just as comfortable for sitting solo at the bar with a drink.

Bitters actually markets itself as suited for everything from solo drinking to dates to friend gatherings, and it also has a room that fits 4–15 people.
Receipt photo review event at Bitters
One more thing we were told at the time of our visit — there's an event where writing a receipt photo review gets you a homemade
'honey cream cheese cracker.' It's a light bite that pairs well with cocktails or whisky, so it might be worth checking if the event is still running when you visit. For reference, the honey cream cheese cracker is currently also listed as its own menu item.

Is Bitters a good date spot in Hongdae?
Bitters isn't just a place to grab a cocktail — the whole sequence felt like an experience: the fun of finding the bookshelf entrance, the great atmosphere once inside, the book-inspired cocktails, and finally the drink the bartender makes for you.

It's especially well suited for days when you want a quiet, atmospheric drink and conversation rather than a loud Hongdae bar. I tried several different cocktails that day, and browsing the menu itself was half the fun, so anyone who already likes cocktails will probably enjoy it even more 🍸 If you're looking for an unusual date spot or an atmospheric cocktail bar in Hongdae, Bitters is worth a visit.
