Lamb skewer restaurant in Taejeon-dong with no gamey taste: Sinbaegok

My boyfriend and I went out for lamb skewers around 8pm on a weekday evening. I'd been craving lamb skewers for a few days and was looking for a place where I could eat them without any gamey taste. That's how I found Sinbaegok Lamb Skewers. It's in Taejeon-dong, Gwangju, Gyeonggi, so after our visit I wanted to introduce it as a Gwangju, Gyeonggi restaurant and a Taejeon-dong restaurant.

Parking and wait times at Sinbaegok Lamb Skewers

Sinbaegok Lamb Skewers Taejeon Branch has parking for about 8 cars around the front and back of the building. Unfortunately when we visited there were no spots left, so we parked at a nearby public parking lot.

If Sinbaegok's parking lot is full, you can park at Taejeon Grocery Mart and get 1 hour supported for ₩3,000~

We visited around 8pm on a weekday and luckily got in with no wait at all. They said if there's a wait due to a lot of customers, they offer a service depending on how long you waited. Also, seating is limited to a maximum of 2 hours if the restaurant is full.

What is on the menu at Sinbaegok Lamb Skewers?

Sinbaegok Lamb Skewers uses no pre-made products — the lamb is trimmed fresh every day, and the owner reportedly spends a long time personally preparing the meat. Hearing that meat prep alone takes 10 hours daily made me feel like this is a place that really cares about the lamb itself.

Beyond lamb skewers, there's also mala xiangguo (spicy mala stir-fry), jisamseon, fish-fragrant eggplant, and mala tofu, so there are quite a lot of menu options — anyone looking for a bar in Gwangju, Gyeonggi would probably be satisfied too~!

Is the couple set enough food for two?

Sinbaegok's value couple set is ₩58,000, and it actually felt like a bit much for two people to finish. Having a set menu also made it a good pick for anyone looking for a budget-friendly restaurant in Gwangju, Gyeonggi~!

What we ordered was the value couple set for ₩58,000. The original composition was original lamb skewers, seasoned lamb skewers, guobaorou (small), and Chinese-style cucumber salad, but

the lamb skewers could be changed to either 2 original or 2 seasoned. Since we both love original lamb skewers, we changed it to 2 original. The Chinese-style cucumber salad could also be swapped for egg fried rice or warm noodles, so we changed it to egg fried rice. So in the end we ordered the couple set as 2 original lamb skewers + guobaorou + egg fried rice haha. The food came out right in order as soon as we ordered.

Was the lamb really free of gamey taste?

Sinbaegok's original lamb skewers had the least gamey taste of any lamb skewers I've eaten so far. You grill the skewers yourself right at the table. We watched the doneness and grilled them ourselves, and the meat itself was really clean-tasting, more than I expected.

Honestly, lamb skewers can be a bit divisive because of that distinctive gamey smell, right? But here it was almost like, "is this really lamb skewers?" haha. When we ate the meat, there was juiciness and a subtle smoky char flavor added, and I really loved it. It was such a clean taste~?!

I was also worried the 2-person couple set portion would be small, but it actually felt like a bit much for the two of us. Eating the lamb skewers together with the guobaorou and fried rice, we were pretty full by the end ㅠ

Visiting Sinbaegok Lamb Skewers with a baby

Sinbaegok Lamb Skewers has baby chairs and a dish sterilizer, so there was little to worry about when bringing a child along. The restaurant's atmosphere was comfortable too, so it seemed fine not just for dates but also for family meals or group gatherings.

Group use and reservations are possible, and takeout and delivery are also available, so it was nice that you can use it in various situations. Along with the lamb skewers, there are lots of good drinking-snack menu items like guobaorou, mala tofu, jisamseon, and mala xiangguo, so it would suit anyone looking for a bar in Gwangju, Gyeonggi too.

There was also ice cream and coffee prepared for dessert. There's a perk where they serve seaweed soup if you visit on your birthday, so if you're looking for a birthday meal spot, keep that in mind.

Final verdict on a date night at Sinbaegok Lamb Skewers

We visited this time craving lamb skewers, and what I liked most was that the distinctive gamey taste of lamb was barely noticeable. Even though it was a set for two, the portion wasn't lacking at all, so we could eat a filling meal. Not just eating the lamb skewers alone but also the guobaorou and fried rice together made it plenty for a full meal.

It was a good spot for a date, but I also think it would suit a family meal, group gathering, or a light drink in the evening. If you're looking for a Gwangju, Gyeonggi restaurant or a Taejeon-dong restaurant, and want lamb skewers without much gamey taste, Sinbaegok Lamb Skewers will probably stick in your memory.
