My hair is thin and a bit dry, and it's semi-wavy, so it tends to look puffy and bulky.

So every time I go to a salon, I ask them to thin it out a lot. Right now my hair is bob length, just touching my shoulders.

This time I wanted to try a bob-length hippie perm, so I looked up hair salons near Gwacheon Government Complex Station. One & Only Hair was one I'd never been to before, but it had a lot of reviews, so I booked and visited!!

One & Only Hair Gwacheon Government Complex Station is located in the retail floor of the Hanyang Sujain officetel building. It's on the basement level, and it turns out it opened by merging two existing Gwacheon branches into one big space!! haha

The location is really close to Gwacheon Government Complex Station, and I drove there — the parking lot was spacious, and since the building had just started welcoming tenants, parking was free, which was even better.

You need to enter the parking lot from behind the building. Turn left, keeping the public parking lot on your left, and you'll get in.

Consultation with Head Designer Hyejin: thick hippie perm over the standard one

The head designer greeted me really warmly. When I told her I came in thinking of a hippie perm but wasn't set on it if it didn't suit my hair condition—

—she told me a hippie perm curls up more tightly than you'd expect, and since my hair tends to puff up, even with thinning it might get really bulky. So she suggested a thicker hippie perm so it wouldn't end up looking like an explosion of curls. We decided to wrap it with slightly thicker rods than a standard hippie perm!! haha

I also asked her to thin out my hair a bit, so she did a small cut before applying the perm solution. She kept the mood light with casual chat throughout, and I felt really comfortable during the whole service. Head Designer Hyejin had such a friendly look and was so kind. Cut, softening solution and rods: the hippie perm step by step

Even with just a simple trim, my hair already felt noticeably lighter and neater. After the cut, they did a quick shampoo, which apparently is to wash out any residue or oil from the hair before the treatment.

Then they applied the softening solution. I moved to a table in the middle for that step — having a table made it more comfortable.

They even baked some bread and brought out sweet snacks for me..!

I think you can also get a drink, but I'd brought my own water, so I just had that haha. After sitting with the softening solution on for a while, they rinsed my hair once. Then they wound the rods on — I can't really tell just by looking, but I'm guessing they picked slightly bigger rods considering my hair condition? haha My hair is always thin and prone to puffing, so the most common service I usually get is magic volume smoothing, so thinking of getting a bob-length hippie perm this time made me kind of excited.

With all the rods wound in, they did a heat treatment, and finally applied the neutralizer. I was so curious what kind of hair would come out of this!! A hippie perm has this slightly voluminous, free-spirited look to it!! haha

How to dry a hippie perm at home

Finally, they rinsed my hair and finished with a blow-dry. She also gave me good pointers on drying. If you dry with too much hot air, the hair gets too dry and frizzy, so she said to alternate between cool air and slightly warm air. And to fully dry the scalp!! haha Head Designer Hyejin at One & Only Hair was kind all the way through. I'd always gone to salons around Indeogwon, but this was my first time at a Gwacheon Government Complex Station salon, and I really liked it. Thank you, Designer Hyejin!

Was the bob-length thick hippie perm worth it?

The curl came out exactly the way I wanted. If I'd just gotten a regular hippie perm, it probably would have curled up way more than I imagined, so I was glad I went with the designer's suggestion!

The fullness gets maximized right after I wake up in the morning — it's really something at that point.
