Gwacheon Japanese restaurant lunch sets and hot pot: Horangigul
In short
Horangigul Gwacheon Branch is a Japanese-style restaurant near Hillstate in Gwacheon, Gyeonggi. My mom and I ordered katsu-don and butadon set meals plus a single serving of daechang jeongol, and the spread was much more generous than expected. Verdict: a satisfying pick for lunch or drinks over hot pot at dinner.

I woke up and Mom suddenly said, “I don’t feel like cooking today,” so eating out it was, haha. We didn’t want anything overly fancy, but we didn’t want to just grab something random either, so we went to Horangigul, a popular spot near Hillstate in Gwacheon.
Actually, this wasn’t my first visit. I remembered enjoying it when I stopped by with my younger sibling one evening for gopchang jeongol (beef intestine hot pot) and beer. This time I came with Mom for the weekday lunch specials at Horangigul Gwacheon Branch (호랑이굴 과천점), and I was surprised by how generous the set meals were. If you’re looking for lunch near Gwacheon Hillstate, I recommend the lunch specials!

Why I came back near Gwacheon Hillstate

Horangigul Gwacheon Branch has the feel of a Japanese izakaya. With its wooden sign, warm lighting, and Japanese-style interior, it felt nice for a set meal at lunch and for hot pot with a beer in the evening. When I came with my younger sibling for gopchang jeongol and beer before, I remember being very satisfied!

So this time, I came back with Mom for the lunch specials. Lunch isn’t just hot pot here—there are lots of options, including katsu-don, butadon, gyudon, and grilled mackerel set meals. Gopchang jeongol or daechang jeongol can feel heavy at lunch, but the set meals come out like a proper rice meal, so they seemed great for an easy lunch too. Of course, I ended up ordering daechang jeongol anyway, haha.
Daechang jeongol is available for one

It felt a little sad to leave with only the lunch specials, so we also ordered a single serving of Horangigul’s daechang jeongol (beef large-intestine hot pot). It came in a small pot, and they set a timer with it. When the timer goes off, a staff member comes over to stir it and explain how to eat it.
It had daechang, tofu, yubu (fried tofu pouch), greens, and vegetables inside. The broth had a nice spicy kick along with the rich nuttiness that is distinctive to daechang, so it was perfect for spooning up between bites of the set meal.

If you leave a receipt review, they add extra meat to the hot pot—definitely get it!

Since we ordered the daechang jeongol as one serving, I thought the portion might be small, but there was quite a bit of daechang in it. It wasn’t just tiny bits either; there were satisfyingly substantial pieces.
A weekday lunch special more generous than expected

At first, since it was called a set meal, I expected just one rice bowl and a few small sides. But when it arrived, it felt almost like a full Korean table spread.

There was udon, chicken karaage, myeongnanjeot (salted pollock roe), pickled garlic scapes, pickled radish, and salad, so it was far more food than I expected. Honestly, if I’d known the set meal came with this much, I might not have ordered the daechang jeongol.
How was the katsu-don set?

I ordered the katsu-don set. It looked generous right from the start: a Japanese-style rice bowl with a large pork cutlet on top, covered with egg and sauce. The cutlet looks pretty big even in the photos, and the actual portion was generous too.
How was the butadon set?

Mom ordered the butadon set. Butadon came with seasoned pork over rice and an egg yolk placed right in the center. There was a good amount of meat, with a lightly fire-grilled kind of flavor!
From lunch sets to evening hot pot

Horangigul Gwacheon Branch is great for a rice meal at lunch thanks to its set menu, and it also looks perfect for drinks with daechang jeongol or gopchang jeongol in the evening. If you’re searching around Gwacheon Hillstate for a hearty lunch set by day or hot pot and drinks at night, I recommend it. In particular, the atmosphere felt nice for a work lunch near Government Complex Gwacheon Station, lunch with Mom, or dinner plans with friends.
Final thoughts

Horangigul Gwacheon Branch is great for gopchang jeongol or daechang jeongol in the evening, but its weekday lunch specials were more satisfying than I expected too. Above all, the set meal came with mini udon, chicken karaage, myeongnanjeot, pickled garlic scapes, and salad, so it was a really well-rounded spread. I also loved that daechang jeongol can be ordered for one; the daechang was substantial, and the spicy broth was great alongside the set meal. If you’re looking for a good lunch spot near Gwacheon Hillstate, I recommend Horangigul Gwacheon Branch!
