Gwangju Korean restaurant with straw-fire grill set: Ju Myeongdang

In short

Ju Myeongdang is a Korean restaurant in Dong-gu, Gwangju, serving straw-fire-smoked aged meat and a generous Namdo-style spread. The 49,000 won Myeongdang Auntie Table for 2–3 came with fully grilled meat, doenjang-jjigae, bibimbap, and mul-naengmyeon. Verdict: a satisfying, relaxed choice when you want a full meat meal without grilling it yourself.

This is based on my visit on September 6, 2026. Tucked into an alley near Dongmyeong-dong Café Street in Gwangju, Ju Myeongdang is a beloved Korean restaurant known for its straw-fire-smoked aged meat and abundant Namdo-style table spreads. In its antique-feeling, wood-paneled second-floor space, I enjoyed the Myeongdang Auntie Table—perfectly grilled before it reaches your table—and left full and happy.

Where is Ju Myeongdang, and where can you park?

It is on the second floor in an alley near Dongmyeong-dong Café Street. For parking, the nearby ACC affiliated parking lot or a public parking lot is convenient.

As you walk the alleys near Dongmyeong-dong Café Street in Gwangju, it is easy to spot the Ju Myeongdang sign on the second floor of a neat building with an antique mood. The atmosphere from the tidy wooden exterior alone put me in a good mood before I even went in.

Follow the stairs up to the second-floor entrance and you will find a warm, neat wooden door. It was such a nice place to have a relaxed meal away from the noise of the busy city alley.

Further inside, there are large tables that work well for company dinners or gatherings, along with separate private-room seating. Clean fabric blinds at each window made it especially nice to have an intimate conversation with my companions.

We settled comfortably at a table toward the back. With no grill plate or burner on the table, the marble tabletop felt wonderfully spacious and clean. The clothes rack for bags and jackets was such a thoughtful touch!

Looking through the tablet menu on the table, I found plenty of set meals substantial enough for dinner, as well as sets that would make excellent drinking snacks. Ju Myeongdang’s signature Myeongdang Auntie Table is its main set: 72-hour straw-fire-aged meat, house-made doenjang-jjigae (soybean paste stew), and a plentiful full spread.

If you participate in a Naver receipt review, I recommend picking up a draft beer or mini patbingsu (shaved ice with sweet red beans). We happily ordered the Myeongdang Auntie Table set, which lets you taste the straw-fire-aged meat, stew, and bibimbap all at once, and waited excitedly.

A straw-fire grilled spread, cooked before it arrives

Straw-fire grilled meat and bamboo-tray spread

The Myeongdang Auntie Table for 2–3 people arrives with the meat completely cooked over straw fire in the kitchen, so there is absolutely no work grilling at the table. You can simply start eating as soon as it arrives—so convenient.

With no grill on the table, there was no worry about splattering grease or my clothes absorbing the smell, which kept the whole meal pleasantly comfortable. A large round bamboo tray held the straw-fire-grilled meat alongside crisp baby napa cabbage and lettuce, spicy fresh kimchi, and tangy pickled onions. My favorite was wrapping a thick piece of meat and garlic dipped in ssamjang (seasoned soybean paste) in crisp baby napa cabbage!

Doenjang-jjigae, bibimbap, and mul-naengmyeon too

Earthenware-pot doenjang-jjigae and bibimbap

The doenjang-jjigae bubbling away in its ttukbaegi (earthenware pot) had a rich, deep savory flavor from traditionally aged soybean paste. It was so alluring that it was hard to put down my spoon. It was generously filled with soft tofu and zucchini, and eating the hot broth with rice and meat wraps made me feel warmly, comfortably full. I am still salivating over that incredibly addictive broth.

And the bibimbap!! After mixing the egg yolk through the bibimbap, I topped it with a thick piece of meat and took a huge bite... Carbs and meat together really are unfair, haha. I cleansed my palate with chilled mul-naengmyeon (cold buckwheat noodles in broth) topped with tiny ice crystals, then polished off every last bit of the bibimbap and stew.

A hearty Namdo table without grilling your own meat

From the straw-fire-grilled meat cooked in the kitchen to the rich house-made doenjang-jjigae, bowl-sized bibimbap, and naengmyeon, the varied Myeongdang Auntie Table spread made me feel looked after from beginning to end. The antique wooden interior and private rooms also made it easy to stay calm and unhurried in the city and have meaningful conversations with people I was with.

It is a reliably satisfying place to visit whenever you want a hearty Korean meal in Dongmyeong-dong, somewhere for a quiet meal with your parents, or simply a clean and delicious meat spread. I loved being able to enjoy the charms of a lovingly prepared Namdo meal in comfort, without the hassle of grilling the meat myself, from start to finish.

Tip! If you have a paid admission ticket for the Asia Culture Center, I hear you can get 5% off and use the parking lot for one hour, too!
