Cold brew with bean choice and egg financier in Mapo, Seoul: Ieo

In short

Ieo Coffee Roasters Gongdeok Branch is a roastery café in Mapo, Seoul, tucked in an alley near the Gyeongui Line Forest Trail between Daeheung and Gongdeok stations. The iced americano and cold brew both come with a choice of beans — the nutty Winsome Blend or the brighter Barmy Breeze — and the Basque cheesecake and egg financier were both pleasantly not-too-sweet. A quiet, sunlit spot to enjoy good coffee and dessert together.

It's about a 5-minute walk from Daeheung Station Exit 3, near the Gyeongui Line Forest Trail between Gongdeok and Daeheung stations! It's tucked a bit inside an alley, so the surroundings are pretty quiet too.

What we ordered

That day we ordered an iced americano, cold brew, Basque cheesecake, and egg financier! Besides the bakery items I ordered, they also sell cookies that looked really good. The visuals were so nice that I originally planned to just order the Basque cheesecake, but ended up ordering the egg financier too... haha

Quiet vibe with sunlight through the floor-to-ceiling window

Above all, since it's in an alley slightly off the main street, the atmosphere is quiet, and sunlight pours in through the huge window, making it a great place to relax with coffee during the day! The vibe was so good that a lot of couples were there on dates too.

The interior vibe was really lovely too — overall there's a lot of wood-tone furniture, with plants, small paintings, and little decor pieces scattered around, giving it a cozy feel! With the sunlight coming in so well, the café looked really pretty. There were also decent seats for solo visitors by the window, so some people came alone to work on their laptop or read!

A roastery café where you can choose your beans

Ieo Coffee Roasters is a café that roasts its own beans. You could see the roasting space in the back, and they also sell whole beans and drip bags separately. What I liked was that they don't just give you one type of bean — you can choose based on your taste. Both the americano and cold brew let you pick your beans haha. I went with the nutty one...

Winsome Blend vs. Barmy Breeze

Winsome Blend centers on a nutty, chocolate-like flavor, while Barmy Breeze is a brighter bean with floral and berry notes. So if you're not usually into coffee with acidity, go with Winsome; if you like a fragrant, lighter cup, Barmy Breeze is the way to go!

The Basque cheesecake is basically the signature dessert of Ieo Coffee Roasters?! The outside is deeply charred while the inside is moist and soft! I don't really like things that are too sweet, so I liked that the sweetness wasn't overpowering haha.

You could really taste the rich cheese flavor that's characteristic of Basque cheesecake, but instead of just heavy sweetness, you could feel the cheese's nutty, dense texture!

So what does the egg financier taste like?

Next up is the egg financier, which was way more satisfying than I expected! It looks similar to an egg tart, but the dough seems to be financier batter. The outside is financier-style, so it's much chewier and more buttery in texture haha. So good... This one also wasn't overly sweet, which I liked, and the outside had a buttery flavor with a crisp texture while the egg part was soft — total perfection...

True to being a roastery, the coffee was really delicious too...

Wrap-up

At Ieo Coffee Roasters, you can pick self-roasted beans to match your taste, and there's a nice range of coffee options from americano to cold brew. If you're near Daeheung Station looking for a great café where you can enjoy delicious coffee along with dessert, I recommend Ieo Coffee Roasters Gongdeok Branch :)
