Buttery salt bread cross-section at Danyang market: Black Garlic Salt
In short
Black Garlic Salt Bread is a salt bread bakery inside Danyang Gugyeong Market in Danyang, Chungbuk. The original salt bread was cut in half to reveal a buttery hollow inside, then compared against a garlic-flaked version and, the next day, the black garlic version. First-timers will get the most fun out of Set 2, which mixes all three flavors.

If you stop by Danyang Gugyeong Market while traveling in Danyang, you'll run into all sorts of garlic-based snacks. This time I tried a pretty special salt bread in Danyang :)

This is Danyang's Black Garlic Salt Bread! The name caught my eye first — 'black garlic salt bread... what would salt bread with black garlic even taste like?' I thought. But trying it, it was way better than I expected!
On the way back to Seoul, I ate the original and garlic salt breads right away, haha. I tried the black garlic one the next day, and since each of the three had its own charm, it was fun comparing them one by one.

Black garlic salt bread with real Danyang character
It was interesting to see that this isn't just salt bread with black garlic thrown in — it really captures the local character of Danyang.

The shop says it uses ✔native Danyang six-clove garlic ✔sun-dried salt from Taean and Sinan ✔top-grade French gourmet butter.

And most importantly, the black garlic! They age Danyang garlic in-house to make their own black garlic extract. This part especially fascinated me.

I actually saw several rice cookers lined up on one side of the shop. They're not just sourcing black garlic from somewhere — you could see with your own eyes that they age it themselves. Each rice cooker had a label like 'black garlic aging, day X,' which was pretty neat, haha. It really felt like, 'oh, they actually make black garlic here!'
What I ordered
This time I brought home two sets total.

- 🥐Set 1: 4 original salt breads
- 🥐Set 2: 2 original + 1 garlic + 1 black garlic
That's 8 salt breads total. If you want to compare different flavors, Set 2 seems like the especially good option.
The original salt bread, eaten right on the way back to Seoul
Honestly, the black garlic version was what I was most curious about at first.

So I went into the original with lowered expectations... and huh? Why is the original so good? LOL. It was way better than I expected. Crispy outside! And with the first bite, a savory buttery flavor hit right away.

What I especially liked was how much butter felt packed at the bottom! The buttery flavor typical of salt bread was really alive here, wonderfully savory. And when you cut it in half, look at this visual! 🥐The butter cave pops right out!

You can see the pockets left behind where the butter melted inside the cross-section — photographing it made it look even more delicious, haha. One reason I love salt bread is exactly this texture: crispy outside, moist inside, packed with buttery flavor, and the original here matched my taste even better than I expected.
I'm taking back my assumption that 'since black garlic is the main thing here, the original would just be so-so'... LOL. If anything, even the basic original had proper buttery flavor and was delicious.
Garlic salt bread's highlight: crispy garlic flakes
Next up is the garlic salt bread. It looks a bit different from the original right from the start.

Crispy garlic flakes are scattered on top, adding a crunchy texture as you eat. On top of the salt bread's own crispiness, the garlic flakes add fun chewing texture.

There's something that's sometimes bothered me about salt bread — since the salt is sprinkled on top, one bite can hit you with 'whoa, that's too salty,' while the next bite is relatively bland.
But here, that feeling was much less. Rather than the saltiness clumping in one spot, it felt evenly woven through every bite. So while eating, I could enjoy the garlic flavor and buttery savoriness together without the saltiness feeling like a burden.

Personally, I think people who like garlic bread would also love this garlic salt bread, haha.
The black garlic salt bread, eaten the next day
And finally, the black garlic salt bread I was most curious about!

I ate this the day after getting back to Seoul.

The packaging had instructions for how to enjoy it best: [If eating the same day, let the bread cool completely before sealing. It's fine to eat as-is until the next day. For longer storage, seal and freeze. Thaw frozen bread at room temperature for 30 minutes, then bake at 180°C in an oven or air fryer for 3 minutes.] So I kept it at room temperature until the next day and ate it just as it was.
Does black garlic mean an overpowering garlic flavor?
Honestly, this is what I was most curious about. I figured black garlic salt bread might have such a strong, distinctive black garlic aroma or taste that opinions could be sharply divided.

But the garlic flavor wasn't as intense as I thought. It was more mildly sweet, without enough of that pungent garlic bite to be off-putting. And since black garlic extract is brushed over the whole bread, the bread itself felt moist — a completely different style from the original.
As I ate, I thought, 'this is kind of like a garlic baguette?' If you like garlic baguette, you'd probably enjoy this black garlic salt bread quite a bit too. Since the black garlic flavor wasn't too strong, I actually found it easy to eat without any burden.
Differences I noticed after trying all three
Summing it up based on my own tasting:
- 🤍Original: crispy + savory + buttery flavor. The basic one, but you could really feel the fundamentals done right 👍 The butter cave in the cross-section and the deep buttery flavor at the bottom especially stood out.
- 🧄Garlic: original + crispy garlic flakes. Recommended if you want to enjoy garlic flavor together with the salty savoriness of salt bread! The garlic flakes on top add fun texture too.
- 🖤Black garlic: moist + sweetly mellow black garlic + garlic baguette vibe. Contrary to my worry about a strong black garlic taste, it was softer and more approachable than expected. Best of all, the black garlic extract brushed over the whole bread gave it a lovely moist feel.
Salt bread made without preservatives or coloring
Something I personally liked!

Black Garlic Salt Bread says it uses no preservatives or coloring, and adds no chemical additives at all. They also make the dough in-house and operate on a same-day-made, same-day-sold principle.
Seeing that the bread is made in-house, alongside the black garlic aging in progress, gave me more confidence in the place. Aging native Danyang six-clove garlic themselves into black garlic and using it in salt bread felt like something different from just a 'black-garlic-flavored bread.'
Also a nice pick for a Danyang travel gift
I ate some right away this time, but I also thought it would work well packed up to bring home in bulk.

If you're looking for a local specialty to bring back for family or friends after a Danyang trip, black garlic salt bread is a pretty fun option. Danyang is famous for garlic, right? Aging that local specialty into black garlic and combining it with salt bread is this place's unique point! They also offer delivery and bulk orders, so people who can't visit Danyang in person can still order.
There's also a way to get a discount!
There's a place worth stopping by together inside Danyang Gugyeong Market.

If you buy something from Danbbang Bakery or Black Garlic Nurungji Fried Chicken and show the receipt, you can get a discount when buying a salt bread set. So if you're planning a food tour of Danyang Gugyeong Market, it might be nice to hit up Black Garlic Nurungji Fried Chicken → Black Garlic Salt Bread → Danbbang Bakery in one trip, haha.
Next time, I'm trying the ice cream salt bread!
If I go back to Danyang, there's one menu item I definitely want to try.

It's the ice cream salt bread! You can apparently enjoy it with Sangha Farm ice cream, made from 100% organic milk, on top of the salt bread. Ice cream on salt bread!!! A savory, salty salt bread paired with cold, smooth milk ice cream — how could that not be delicious, haha. I was too busy trying all the different salt breads this time to get to it, but next time I visit Danyang Gugyeong Market, I'm definitely trying the ice cream salt bread. 🤭
Deciding where to go on a Danyang trip?
The Black Garlic Salt Bread I tried this time was interesting not simply as 'salt bread with black garlic in it,' but as a place that took Danyang's local specialty, garlic, aged it themselves, and worked it into a salt bread dessert.

In particular, the original salt bread was surprisingly delicious, the garlic salt bread's crispy garlic flakes were great, and the black garlic salt bread's moist, garlic-baguette-like flavor won me over. The three go in slightly different flavor directions, so if it's your first visit, I'd recommend ordering a set with a variety, like I did!
If you're planning to visit Danyang Gugyeong Market, stop by while you're on a market food tour. 🥐🧄 This was Black Garlic Salt Bread, a special salt bread you can only find in Danyang :)
