Gwangjang Market bakery, choco pie cut in half: Ssuk's Choco Pie Seoul

In short

Ssuk's Choco Pie Seoul is a mugwort (ssuk) choco pie bakery at the South Gate 1 entrance of Gwangjang Market in Jongno, Seoul, a short walk from Jongno 5-ga Station. Taking home the 6-piece box of the shop's popular flavors and cutting the Gwangju Real Choco pie in half revealed fresh whipped cream instead of marshmallow, deep cacao that is not too sweet, and bits of nuts. Each pie is almost the size of a cake, so one is filling on its own, and it tastes best with a glass of milk.

What kind of place is Ssuk's Choco Pie Seoul?

Ssuk's Choco Pie Seoul is a mugwort (ssuk) choco pie specialty shop you run into right at the Namil Gate entrance of Gwangjang Market. It's a Gwangjang Market spot selling traditional Korean-style desserts, and a must-visit dessert stop.

I'd really wanted to visit this Gwangjang Market spot, Ssuk's Choco Pie Seoul. The 'ssuk' in the name is mugwort, the herb that appears alongside the bear in Korea's founding myth of Dangun — a truly Korean ingredient. Let's find out about Korea's first mugwort choco pie, made for a whole 10 years now.

Ordering the Ssuk's 6-piece choco pie box

I packed up the 6-piece set with Ssuk's six most popular flavors in one box.

Heavy, well-packaged Ssuk's Choco Pie 6-piece set

The packaging is pretty and the choco pies feel quite heavy. Let's hurry over and open it up, excited!

Opening the 6-piece set: which flavors are inside

Green box, I guess because it's mugwort. The packaging is so cute.

Ssuk's choco pies are refrigerated, so the freshness is on a different level. Unlike regular choco pies, this is a chilled fresh choco pie, so you can taste how fresh the cream is.

Pamphlet and business card included with the set

A pretty pamphlet and business card were tucked inside too. This would make a really great gift.

Opening it up, it's so pretty, T_T. Desserts really do give that satisfaction from visuals alone. I felt so happy the moment I opened it!

Out of the six flavors total—

The Gwangju real choco pie chosen from the set

Today's pick: the Gwangju Real Choco pie cut in half

Today's pick is the Gwangju real choco. It's individually seal-wrapped to keep it from air exposure. Clean enough packaging that you could buy the whole box and share it with people.

Cross-section of the choco pie showing whipped cream

The choco pie is almost the size of a whole cake. Big and heavy. And it seems like they used really good ingredients — the second I tore it open, a rich cacao smell hit me.

The cross-section has quite a bit of height too.

It cuts very smoothly. Inside is packed with fresh whipped cream, not marshmallow. The taste is less sweet than I expected, with a deep cacao flavor and crunchy nuts. It feels like a delicious cacao deep cake. Eating just one really fills you up, haha. Goes really, really well with milk.

Store front decorated in green

Ssuk's Choco Pie Seoul is decorated in mugwort green, which gives it a very kitschy, cute feel.

It stands out even from far away, so it's not hard to find.

A cute interior, decked out charmingly with figurines and objects.

There's a Ssuk's choco pie display case,

and as soon as you walk in, a staff member helps you with a free tasting — super kind, and the tasting portion is huge too, haha.

The inside was so cute that it was fun just looking around.

As a Gwangjang Market spot, it sells traditional Korean-style desserts, but it has a really charming, cute, and polished feel.

Ssuk's Choco Pie Seoul, the Gwangjang Market spot, was running various events. The sampler comes with a full 3-piece set of Ssuk's cookies, so definitely try to join in.

Gift sticker and packaging service info

You can also get free gift stickers attached. They sell drinks too, and offer courier shipping. There are ice cooler bags for takeout customers as well.

Ssuk's wine is even displayed on the shelves, making it a really great gift lineup. Sweet choco pie and wine pair well together, after all.
