Seongnaecheon stream café with red bean butter ciabatta: Grid Cafe

In short

Grid Cafe is a bakery café on Macheon-ro in Songpa, Seoul, close to Seongnaecheon Mulbit Plaza. After a walk along the Seongnaecheon stream, the writer ordered angbeoteo chiabatta (red bean and butter ciabatta) for 4,500 won, an egg tart for 3,700 won and salt bread for 3,000 won with a decaf Americano, and a rainy window seat made it better still. The popular jambon-beurre sandwich was already sold out just after 11am at Grid Cafe, so the verdict is to arrive earlier next time.

The display case at Grid Cafe was packed with tarts, scones, salt bread, ciabatta, and even loaf bread — so many kinds it was genuinely fun just picking what to get.

I got there diligently just after 11am, but wouldn't you know it — the popular jambon-beurre sandwich was already sold out, so I didn't get to try it ㅠㅠ Guess you really do have to hustle for the good stuff. Ordering is easy though, done at the kiosk.

What we ordered at Grid Cafe: red bean butter ciabatta, egg tart, salt bread, decaf Americano

What I picked at Grid Cafe: Americano (decaf), salt bread, egg tart, and ambeoteo chiabatta.

Bread and coffee at a window seat on a rainy day

It happened to be raining, and I sat at a window seat looking out at it — eating while watching the rain outside made the mood so much better.

Ambeoteo chiabatta filled with red bean paste and butter

Angbeoteo chiabatta (red bean butter ciabatta), 4,500 won

The ambeoteo chiabatta was ₩4,500. Crisp on the outside, with sweet red bean paste and a thick slab of butter tucked inside the Italian bread — chewy, mild, and easy to eat.

Egg tart filling shown cut in half

Egg tart, 3,700 won

The egg tart was ₩3,700. I cut it right in half — you can see the golden filling packed all the way through, right? One bite in, it was so soft and delicious that I finished the whole thing in no time.

Grid Cafe's plain salt bread

Salt bread, 3,000 won

The salt bread was ₩3,000. Salty yet savory, absolutely full of flavor! Crisp outside, really moist inside — a perfect match with the Americano.

Decaf Americano with salt bread

Decaf Americano at Grid Cafe

A mellow yet clean Americano. I'm sensitive to caffeine so I ordered it decaf. It went really well with the salt bread, egg tart, and ambeoteo chiabatta.

After a walk along Seongnaecheon, I spent a leisurely day soaking in the damp, sentimental mood of a rainy day, enjoying delicious bread and a fragrant decaf Americano. Next time I'll move even faster so I can finally get that sandwich!
