Looking for somewhere solid to eat with my kid on a weekend evening, I ended up at Dongchundang Shabu Shabu Kalguksu in Dugok-dong, Osan. Picking the menu matters a lot when eating out with a child — I wanted a place where the adults could enjoy the food while the kid could eat comfortably too, so I went for shabu kalguksu (hot pot with knife-cut noodles).

Parking and how big is the restaurant?
What I liked most about Dongchundang was the huge parking lot. There's plenty of private parking, so even on a weekend evening I could pull in without any parking stress.
Dongchundang Shabu Shabu Kalguksu Osan Dugok Branch turned out to be a pretty large restaurant.

With about 140 pyeong of space, the tables are spaced generously, and it looked comfortable for families or bigger groups too.

Visiting with a kid usually means worrying about everything from parking to seating, but here — big parking lot plus big dining room — it felt like an easy spot for a family meal.
They also had kids' chairs ready and could accommodate groups, so it looked good for family gatherings or eating out with parents too.
What is on the self-serve sauce bar?
The self-serve bar was really well organized! There are sauces that go nicely with shabu shabu too.
If you want to make your own soy dipping sauce or eat the kalguksu with a bit of a kick, adding the chili works well! The geotjeori (fresh kimchi) also pairs nicely with shabu shabu!

You can even pack up any leftover octopus to take home yourself!
And here's another thing that makes Dongchundang appealing — free-flowing makgeolli (rice wine).
That's welcome news for makgeolli lovers. With the pancake menu on hand too, it seems like a satisfying setup if adults are visiting on their own. Since I was with my kid, I only got a small taste of the vibe, haha. 😊
On the left side of the restaurant there's a waiting area. There's also a photo zone, so it might be worth snapping a memory there.
Kids' chairs are ready too, so no problem bringing a toddler along!

Clear-broth shabu kalguksu and octopus, chive and minari pancake
We ordered the restaurant's signature shabu kalguksu, going with the clear broth so we could share it with our kid.

We also ordered the octopus-chive-minari pancake since it seemed like it would go well with the shabu kalguksu.
Yeolmu (young radish greens) barley bibimbap came out as a complimentary side!

Our shabu kalguksu arrived and started bubbling away right on the table.

We went with the clear broth, which is definitely the better choice for eating with a kid! True to shabu shabu style, we cooked it with plenty of vegetables and mushrooms, and the broth naturally picked up the flavor of the ingredients.

Once the broth is boiling, you cook the meat piece by piece. With a kid along, you can cook and cool down their portion separately, which made it a solid choice for a family meal out.
Finishing with mugwort kalguksu noodles
What I loved most was getting to finish with kalguksu noodles after the shabu shabu. Shabu shabu alone can feel like it's missing something, but finishing off with noodles in the broth makes for a really filling meal.
Dongchundang's kalguksu noodles are made with mugwort, so even the color is a bit different from regular noodles. They're chewy yet clean-tasting, and paired really well with the shabu shabu broth.
The aged soy sauce that goes so well with shabu shabu!

The most memorable side dish: octopus, chive and minari pancake
The octopus-chive-minari pancake we ordered alongside the shabu kalguksu. Personally, this was the side dish that stuck with me the most that day.
A golden-fried pancake topped with plump octopus, with chives and minari (water dropwort) mixed throughout — it looked delicious from the first glance.
The fragrant chives and minari combined with the chewy octopus, and it went really well alongside the shabu shabu.
The pancake pairs especially well with makgeolli too, so if you're visiting with other adults, shabu kalguksu plus the octopus-chive-minari pancake plus makgeolli would make a great combo.

What other menu items can you order?
Dongchundang has a range of menu items beyond the basic shabu kalguksu. Signature options include a spicy, rich-broth mushroom hot pot kalguksu, and there's also beef or pork shabu, so you can choose depending on your taste.

After finishing the shabu shabu, we cleared the fried rice too!

Light and fluffy, and really good.

With the spacious restaurant and ample parking, it looked like a good spot to bring parents along or host a family gathering. Especially good news for anyone looking for a restaurant with easy parking!
And Excellent ice cream for dessert!! Just about perfect 👍

There's also a longevity mushroom shabu kalguksu made with organic cordyceps and longevity mushroom, which seems like a good option for anyone after something a bit more special.

Why it worked so well for a weekend dinner with a child
A great place for a weekend dinner out with a kid. This time, going with my child, I chose the mild clear-broth shabu kalguksu, and I was happy the whole family could eat it together.

When eating out with a kid, it matters whether there's a separate kids' menu or non-spicy options, but honestly it's so much easier on the parents when everyone can just share one dish together.

Cordyceps tea, black sesame soy milk, coffee, popcorn, roasted corn — you can enjoy the full dessert spread too! Dongchundang Shabu Shabu Kalguksu Osan Dugok Branch really is the ideal spot for a family meal out. Recommended for anyone craving a warm bowl of broth!
