Where to find dakgangjeong in Jayang Market: Mr. Kim's Chicken

Today I'm bringing you a review of a place I've always been curious about every time I go to Jayang Market, because it's always crowded — Mr. Kim's Chicken Jayang Market Branch.

Every time I passed through the market I'd see people taking food home in boxes, and lines forming too, so I kept telling myself I had to try it sometime. This time I finally got takeout!

At Mr. Kim's Chicken Jayang Market Branch, the phrase "15-year family-run dakgangjeong, one of Seoul's top three" immediately caught my eye.

The sight of the whole fried chickens had me drooling...!!!!

Even visiting on a weekday afternoon, there were still plenty of takeout customers, and they fry it up the moment you order — their hands move so fast haha.

I thought this place was takeout-only, but it turns out there's also seating inside to eat haha. Next time I might try eating freshly fried dakgangjeong right there in the shop.

What I ordered at Mr. Kim's Chicken

This time we ordered takeout to eat comfortably at home. What we ordered was:

  • Medium-spicy dakgangjeong, large size
  • Drumsticks, 4 pieces
  • Cheese jalapeño sauce, 1 order

Dakgangjeong fried the moment you order! I thought they'd just be packing up chicken that was made ahead of time, but they actually started frying right after we ordered.

Watching them fry the battered chicken fresh and toss it in the sauce of your chosen spice level was a treat to watch too~~ My little one came along and loved it haha.

While waiting for the takeout, I kept smelling that amazing aroma — I nearly ripped the box open and ate one on the way home.

Freshly fried and warm, with the sauce evenly tossed all over — it looked delicious even before I took a bite!!! The large size is ₩13,000, and the portion is generous~~~ there's even rice cake mixed in.

The coating was crispy and evenly covered in sauce, so the first bite hit me with a sweet-and-spicy flavor right away.

I ordered medium-spicy, and it wasn't a sudden wave of heat but more of a subtle spiciness that builds as you eat, which kept me reaching for more! I love dakgangjeong with this kind of gentle spice — I never get tired of it, you know?

Is the dakgangjeong still crispy cold the next day?

Dakgangjeong in particular can go soggy fast if there's too much sauce, but the version at Mr. Kim's Chicken Jayang Market Branch kept its crispy texture and still tasted great even eaten cold the next day.

I also tried dipping it in the cheese jalapeño sauce, and it was a completely different flavor from the plain dakgangjeong — great for mixing things up as you eat. I think I'll be craving this again next time I go to Jayang Market!! And I think I'll pick this sauce again too!!! A satisfying choice.

The drumsticks we ordered separately had a good amount of meat on them too, so there was fun in gnawing them off the bone. Four drumsticks for ₩6,000 is a solid deal, don't you think??

Would I go back to Mr. Kim's Chicken in Jayang Market?

If you're looking for a dakgangjeong spot in Jayang Market, this is worth stopping by! I'd always been curious about Mr. Kim's Chicken Jayang Market Branch because it was always packed, and now that I've tried it myself, I get why it's so popular.

It's dakgangjeong that tastes great even cold, so if you've been walking past it every time you go to Jayang Market like I did, this time give it a try.
