My husband and I were trying to figure out where to take the kids for dinner when I heard there was a place in Magok that really nails negitoro (minced fatty tuna), which I'm absolutely obsessed with.

There's never been a decent Japanese restaurant near our neighborhood, which always bummed me out, so I headed to Ilpum Magok with a lot of excitement.

When we got there, a clean storefront and a standee covered in mouthwatering food photos greeted us out front~
Ilpum Magok's atmosphere, parking and seating for families
Ilpum Magok is a Japanese restaurant located on Gonghang-daero near Magok Station, with a pretty spacious layout that includes both counter seats and tables. Parking is free for up to 2 hours at lunch and 3 hours at dinner.

The calm air you feel the moment you walk in is so typical of a high-end Japanese restaurant, and I loved it. The interior is bigger than it looks, with plenty of counter and table seats, making it perfect for both dates and family dinners.

At the entrance, the hours were posted neatly. They're closed every Monday and open Tuesday through Sunday, so definitely check before you go~ We'd booked ahead and were seated at a window table that was set up beautifully. The interior is so clean I could see why plenty of couples come here on dates too.

There were baby chairs set up in one corner too, so it felt like a comfortable spot for families with kids.

Best of all, the view of Magok through the huge window felt like looking at a painting in a frame.

The menu had everything from kaisendon (seafood rice bowl) to sushi, and today we came ready to order big. By the way, parking support is generous too — free for 2 hours at lunch and 3 hours at dinner~

Seeing the wall covered in celebrity autographs made it clear all over again that this place has already built a reputation as a top kaisendon spot in Magok.
How did the negitoro ilpumdong special and futomaki taste?
Ilpum Magok's ilpumdong special is a kaisendon loaded with an insane amount of minced tuna, or negitoro. Topped with sea urchin (uni) and salmon roe too, it was a hugely satisfying bowl on its own.

I really love negitoro and I've been hunting for a place that does it right, but there was nothing decent nearby. So after some searching I ended up all the way in Magok, and the moment I saw the visuals of the ilpumdong special I knew I'd made the right call!
The ilpumdong special in particular had such a massive amount of negitoro that my jaw dropped the second I saw it. The savoriness of the minced tuna combined with the uni and popping salmon roe filled my mouth with happiness.

I put a bit of negitoro and wasabi on the crispy seaweed that came with it and popped the whole thing in my mouth.
Wow, this literally melts in your mouth
My husband took a bite too and gave it a thumbs up, saying the ingredient quality was on another level.

Next up was the dish I'd been most looking forward to — my husband's favorite, futomaki (thick sushi roll)! Each piece was so huge it was hard to fit in one bite, but the way the flavors of all the ingredients came together was truly outstanding. The colorful look of it fascinated the kids too, and the whole family enjoyed the meal together.

Between the softness of the negitoro and the packed texture of the futomaki, it really felt worth the trip out here~
Karaage, cold udon and milk panna cotta: the side orders
At Ilpum Magok, the karaage (Japanese fried chicken), cold udon, and milk pannacotta came out one after another, almost like a course meal. Karaage is a dish we always order whenever we come with the kids.

The karaage we always order when we bring the kids to Ilpum Magok was a textbook example of crispy outside, juicy inside. Dipped in the sauce that came with it, the savory flavor of the batter really came alive, and the kids polished it off in no time.

While we were still enjoying the mains, a warm cold udon was served, and the noodles were so wonderfully chewy. The broth was deep and clean-tasting too, refreshing our palates just as things were starting to feel rich.
The meal wrapped up with a smooth milk pannacotta for dessert. Its bouncy, sweet flavor made it feel like we'd just finished a fancy course meal. The portions overall were really generous, so all four of us left the restaurant patting our full bellies happily.
Is 64,000 won for four worth it at Ilpum Magok?
That day, the total we spent as a family of four at Ilpum Magok was 64,000 won. I'm planning to bring my in-laws here soon too, and this time I definitely want to try the bongchobap (hand-rolled sushi)~
For 64,000 won total, the whole family got to enjoy high-quality Japanese food in an upscale atmosphere, which made for a very satisfying time. From the neat table setting and friendly service to the gorgeous view through the huge window, nothing was lacking, so I'd recommend it as a top kaisendon spot in Magok. It seems like it would be a safe pick for a special date night or a family gathering with parents~
