Hongdae study café with exposed concrete: Pip Espresso Bar

Today I visited Pip Espresso Bar, my go-to pick in Yeonnam-dong that I've stopped by countless times whenever I'm in the neighborhood!

This Hongdae-area café is open Monday to Sunday from 10:00 to 23:00. Takeout, pets, free Wi-Fi, and group seating are all available.

This hip Seoul café is a 10-minute walk from Hongik University Station Exit 3.

The entrance corridor: wood against exposed concrete

Walking into this Yeonnam-dong café, the first thing you meet is a long corridor — one side finished in warm wood paneling, the other in cold exposed concrete, making the contrast between materials really stand out. The ceiling pipes are left exposed with track lighting installed, adding to the industrial mood.

What does this monochrome Hongdae café feel like?

Once you step further inside, the warmth from earlier disappears, replaced by rough-textured concrete walls and floors that give off a cold, hip energy. Even the floor-to-ceiling glass off to the side looks unique!

Marcel Breuer's Wassily Chair — an icon of modern design — sits in the space, giving it a gallery-like feel, and the shelves display an assortment of lighting fixtures as objets d'art, making it fun just to look around.

Best seats for studying at Pip Espresso Bar

Further inside, warm wooden flooring meets a bright gray louvered wall, and the soft lighting and posters mounted on the wall really finish off the atmosphere — it truly earns its reputation as a place with great vibes. From window-side bar seats to cozy indoor tables, the space is used in so many different ways that picking a seat is half the fun.

Mostly 2- and 4-person round and square tables are set up here, and while most Yeonnam-dong cafés tend to be lively and crowded, Pip Espresso Bar's seating is arranged with a lot of breathing room, so even when it's busy, people don't get in each other's way and you can spend your time comfortably :)

The pet-friendly outdoor terrace

This Yeonnam-dong spot with a great terrace is the perfect place on a nice day — the stylish posters on the walls even give it an exotic feel. There are mostly round tables suited for 2-3 people, and since this café allows pets, this open, airy spot would be great if you're bringing your dog along.

How does the macadamia financier taste?

The macadamia financier is loaded with that signature burnt-butter flavor financiers are known for, giving you a deep, rich butter aroma. Big chunks of macadamia are baked in, and the more you chew, the nuttier it gets — insane. The outside is slightly crisp while the inside stays dense and full, that perfect crisp-outside-moist-inside texture — if you love a good financier, you have to try this, no question.
