On a Saturday for lunch, I wanted something neat and refined in Japanese cuisine, so my boyfriend and I headed to Manmok near Seonleung Station for a bit of a date. We arrived around 1:30pm and luckily got seated right away, no waiting! Soooo lucky~

What is the atmosphere like inside Manmok?

The moment we stepped inside Manmok, the low lighting combined with dark wood finishes gave off that cozy feel unique to upscale Japanese restaurants. Personally, I really love this kind of atmosphere 🤍

The layout is well thought out — great for dates and gatherings, but also totally comfortable for eating alone. My first impression was that this is exactly the kind of place near Seonleung Station to come to when you're craving a proper, refined Japanese meal.

What comes with the whole-eel rice bowl set at Manmok?

For lunch, we each ordered Manmok's signature dish: the whole eel rice bowl.

I also appreciated the small detail that napkins and cups were neatly stored to the side of the table, keeping it spacious and tidy.

As my partner and I chatted away, a neatly arranged tray and side dishes were soon served. The side dishes were baek-kimchi (white kimchi) and mu-saengchae (spicy radish salad), and personally I found the mu-saengchae really delicious!

The tray was centered around the main eel rice bowl lunch box, joined by a sesame-dressing salad, wasabi, ginger, pickled radish, pickled sansho pepper, and other sides, along with chawanmushi with shrimp and a soup with a hint of matsutake mushroom.

Starting with the warm, soft chawanmushi really soothed my stomach and perked up my appetite!

With such a carefully composed meal, I thought this would be a great lunch spot for office workers in the area to stop by for something clean and put-together.

How does the eel taste with sansho pepper?

The moment we opened the lid of Manmok's eel rice bowl lunch box, the beautifully browned, appetizing grilled eel immediately caught our eyes.

The eel was cut into big, generous pieces, so every bite filled my mouth with an insane amount of happiness.

Eel rice bowls can easily turn slightly greasy as you eat, but here the excess oil was completely gone, leaving a texture that was moist inside yet chewy on the outside — truly standout. The secret sauce wasn't overly sweet and was seasoned all the way through with just the right saltiness, so the flavor balance was spot on!

In particular, sprinkling a little of the sansho pepper powder provided at the table added a fresh, bright note that made the flavor even richer — an absolute favorite for us as a couple!

Looking around, I noticed quite a few people eating alone, and since the dish has zero fishy smell and tastes clean, I think this is the perfect Gangnam eel rice bowl restaurant for a satisfying solo lunch or dinner. Of course, it's just as great for a date like ours, or a small company dinner!

Dessert at Manmok: matcha or black tea handmade ice cream

As we were wrapping up the meal, handmade ice cream was served for dessert. You could choose between matcha and black tea, so I picked matcha and my boyfriend picked black tea.

It seemed to be handmade, as the texture was chewy like gelato, and the matcha and black tea aromas were so fragrant that they completely reset the lingering eel flavor in my mouth — a clean finish!

From the calm atmosphere of the space to the care put into the food and the dessert finish, it was an overall satisfying meal. This is a place I'd love to come back to whenever I'm craving a proper, refined eel rice bowl, or want to feel pampered even when eating alone.
