The sign reads "It's not that we're selling cheap, it's just that there's no reason to be expensive" — isn't that phrase incredibly confident haha. Right next to it: "Delicious even when cold, even better when cold" 🤍 As someone taking it home to eat, that line was music to my ears.

How do you order at Gimssi Chicken?

At Gimssi Chicken Suyu Market Branch, you pay first, then pick up your order in person when your number is called from the receipt. While waiting, they toss freshly fried chicken in sauce right there on a big flat pan — the sound and smell were... I wanted to grab a piece right on the spot, haha. Everything is fried and tossed to order, so the turnover is really fast.

At the counter there's also a notice about "whitening," the phenomenon where the surface of dakgangjeong turns white — they kindly explain it's a natural effect from the sauce or starch reacting to humidity and temperature, and totally fine to eat. I really appreciate that kind of thoughtfulness ✨

What sells out near closing time at Suyu Market?

Honestly I arrived right around closing time, and when I looked at the display trays, they were almost completely empty 🥲 The old-style whole fried chicken and other menu items were already sold out. All that was left was the dakgangjeong menu!! Luckily that's what I wanted most anyway, so it turned out lucky for me.

Still, if you go late things can sell out like this, so if you want to try a variety of items, I'd recommend visiting with plenty of time to spare! I guess that just means locals really love this place 👀

The prices genuinely surprised me... considering a single whole chicken these days can run over ₩20,000, this place is basically pure market generosity!!

For sauces I picked cheese jalapeño, seasoned chicken sauce, spicy seasoned sauce, and mustard 💛

Got home and opened the box with my husband, hearts pounding!! 🎁 One box had dakgangjeong and fried chicken side by side, with rice cakes tucked in between — it looked generous just from the visuals.

How does the mild dakgangjeong (medium, 9,000 won) taste?

Gimssi Chicken's mild dakgangjeong medium size is ₩9,000, and the spice level is basically nonexistent — more of a sweet-salty soy sauce base. The sauce color is a deep glossy brown ✨ Bite in and the outside has a chewy sauce coating while the inside stays juicy! Even people who can't handle spicy food can enjoy this without worry 🧡

Even after sitting for a while, it wasn't soggy at all — the sauce actually clung on even tighter, and I immediately understood what "better when cold" meant, haha.

🍡 The rice cake inside the dakgangjeong is honestly the hidden star!! Chewy rice cake soaked in sweet sauce — my husband and I were side-eyeing each other over the last piece, haha.

Boneless fried chicken with the four sauces

The medium boneless fried chicken is ₩8,000, and the 4 sauces are ₩2,000 (₩500 each). The batter has a rough, textured style with visible ridges. It's crispy, with a subtle pepper aroma, and the meat isn't dry at all, so I kept reaching for more 👀

It's tasty plain, but dipped in the cheese jalapeño sauce it got a nutty richness plus a bit of heat — it felt like a completely different dish ❤️🔥

Dip it deep into the spicy seasoned chicken sauce and you get a spicy-sweet-salty combo! It's fun getting several flavors out of one order of fried chicken, so I really recommend adding sauces 🥫
