Birthday dinner at a Namyangju creekside BBQ: 2002 Witch's Arpeggio

In short

2002 Witch's Arpeggio is a tomato-jang pork belly restaurant in Wabu-eup, Namyangju, Gyeonggi, with outdoor tables beside a creek. For a pre-birthday dinner with friends, the writer ordered the Witch's jar-aged tomato pork belly for two at 40,000 won, a crispy-outside-chewy-inside potato pancake, and pollock roe scorched-rice fried rice cooked in a cauldron, and watched a staff member's torch fire show. Aged in tomato jang instead of gochujang, the pork belly finished clean with no heavy aftertaste, so 2002 Witch's Arpeggio is worth a trip for a special meal with the sound of the creek.

☁️ To celebrate my upcoming birthday, I went out to a Namyangju valley with friends! Wanting a special meal surrounded by greenery and nature away from the city, I visited 2002 Witch's Arpeggio, well known as a Namyangju valley restaurant.

Outdoor seats right beside the creek: Namyangju open-air BBQ mood

2002 Witch's Arpeggio sits right beside a cool, gently flowing creek! The clean outdoor seating overlooks the water.

It's nice in daytime, but apparently it's especially famous as a Namyangju open-air BBQ spot at night for its atmosphere.

Right next to the restaurant runs this clean, cool creek. Just sitting there listening to the running water was healing 🌊

A small waterfall seen from the stone steps

Go down the stone steps beside the restaurant and you can even get close to a little waterfall (sort of)😆 Nature really is the best 🌱 The atmosphere had me even more excited for the food!

What is tomato-jang aged pork belly, with zero gochujang?

2002 Witch's Arpeggio is famous for using zero gochujang — its pork belly is aged in tomato-jang instead! It's their own special paste made by blending various ingredients around tomatoes, aged for 48 hours in a jar for deep umami, apparently, based on a 25-year tradition.

Tomato kimchi, side dishes and how to grill the pork belly

The food came out fast right after we ordered, and I was won over first by the bright red look of the tomato-jang pork belly sauce!

Bright red tomato-jang pork belly and potato pancake

I was won over a second time by the crispy-looking potato pancake, something I'd never seen before ❤️

The side dishes were generous and looked delicious too. All sorts of wrap vegetables and sauces were laid out 👍🏻

And this place's real trick ❤️ tomato kimchi haha. I'd never seen this kind of kimchi before so it felt unfamiliar, but tasting it, it was kind of like eating oi-sobagi (stuffed cucumber kimchi)? and it really suited my taste! My friends enjoyed it a lot too!

Since it's pork belly with tomato-jang sauce, you flip it every 2–3 minutes so the sauce doesn't burn. Staff grilled the rest for us themselves!

The crispy-outside, chewy-inside potato pancake

Just like the name says, the crispy-chewy texture is no joke 😋 Completely different from any potato pancake I've had before! It came out almost deep-fried, with a great crunchy bite, and dipped in the buldak mayo sauce it was a spicy-savory combo that was totally perfect!

The torch fire show the staff put on at your table

🔥 A fun-to-watch tomato-jang pork belly fire show. Once the pork belly is nearly cooked through, staff finish it off with a torch! Watching that smoky flavor get seared right in made my appetite shoot up haha. Now I'm ready to eat!

I tried it in the order the restaurant recommends for eating tomato-jang pork belly at its best 😆

How does the tomato-jang pork belly taste?

At first the idea of 'tomato-jang' felt a little unfamiliar, but when I actually tried it, it kept the familiar umami of gochujang pork belly while losing the heavy, cloying quality gochujang usually has — which made it even better 👍🏻

Because it's tomato-based, the aftertaste was really clean, and it went well no matter which wrap I used! Definitely try this — a flavor I'd really recommend 😋

The spice wasn't overly intense either, just the right amount of spicy-delicious, so it never got tiring and my chopsticks kept going back — pretty addictive lol. I don't usually love lettuce wraps but I ate a ton of them here.

Ending with pollock roe scorched-rice cauldron fried rice

No matter how full you are, fried rice isn't optional, it's mandatory 👏🏼

Scorched-rice cauldron fried rice topped with mozzarella cheese

Rice stir-fried right in the tomato-jang sauce combined with mozzarella cheese — the kind of flavor that made me scrape the pot down to the last spoonful!

And on top of that, it even had pollock roe in it, popping with every bite 👍🏻 2002 Witch's Arpeggio nailed the taste, texture, and visuals all at once 😆

Final verdict on 2002 Witch's Arpeggio

Listening to the creek flowing through nature, enjoying the carefully aged tomato-jang pork belly and even a fire show — that's 2002 Witch's Arpeggio in Namyangju 🍅 If you want to make a special, delicious memory, I really recommend visiting it as part of a Namyangju drive course!
