Ocean-view café in Gangneung for coffee and bread: Baegya Coffee

After finishing a run, I went to Baegya Coffee (백야커피) on Haean-ro in Gangneung for a cold coffee. The parking lot and interior were spacious, making it easy to take a relaxed break, and what stayed with me most was the seating arranged toward the sea.

Was it easy to park and enter the café?

There were parking lots both in front of and behind the café. Parking in the rear lot gave me convenient direct access to the second floor. The café was large, extending up to the rooftop.

What breads and drinks were available?

The first thing I noticed upon entering was the wide variety of breads on display. I was hungry after my run, so I changed my plan to have only coffee and chose some bread too.

The drinks ranged from Americano to lattes, with tea and ice cream as well. It looked as though there were plenty of choices even when visiting with someone who does not drink coffee.

There were breads substantial enough for a meal as well as sweet desserts, so I looked through them one by one before choosing.

The display-case doors opened automatically when I pressed a button. It was fun to come across that feature while choosing bread. The prices felt less burdensome than I had expected, so I picked two.

Was it easy to move between floors with drinks and bread?

After ordering, I went up to the second floor to eat while looking at the sea. There were places to set a tray down both where I waited for the elevator and inside it. That made it easier on my hands when carrying drinks and bread together.

Could you see the sea well from the seating?

The interior was spacious and tidy, with a variety of tables. It was easy to choose a seat based on the size of the group or personal preference.

In the area I looked around, every seat faced the sea. The seats in front of the full-height windows were arranged in tiers, so there was less concern about the view being blocked by the row ahead. We sat closest to the beach.

When I visited, I heard that a flower garden was planned for the beach directly in front. I was curious how the scenery would change once it was added.

Backlighting can be a concern when taking photos with the sea behind you, but there was a mirror here, making it nice for taking pictures that included the ocean scenery.

How were the coffee and breads?

The coffee had a subtle nutty flavor. It was refreshing to drink after finishing my run.

The egg tart had a crisp crust and a moderately sweet filling. It was not overly sweet for my taste, so it went well with the coffee.

The other bread was generously filled with cheese. With the first bite, I could taste the savory cheese flavor, which went well with the mild bread. It suited my usual preference for cheese.

Can you pack up leftover bread?

I could pack up leftover bread myself at the self-packing area. Drinks and trays could be taken to the return station on the first floor. Having areas for packing and returns made the visit convenient.

On this visit, I was able to rest in a spacious setting without feeling crowded. The coffee and bread were good, but what I liked most was being able to sit comfortably and look out at the sea.
