Danyang market dakgangjeong tub for two days: Danyang Heukmaneul
In short
Danyang Heukmaneul Nurungji Dakgangjeong is a black garlic Korean fried chicken shop inside Danyang Gugyeong Market in Danyang, Chungbuk, where the nurungji (toasted rice crust) topping is grilled in the shop. One tub of the double black garlic flavor (20,000 won) and a bottle of black garlic makgeolli were taken back to the accommodation as a late-night snack, and two people could not finish it, so the rest was eaten again at home the next day. Even cold, the coating at Danyang Heukmaneul Nurungji Dakgangjeong stayed crisp, which makes it a good takeout snack or edible souvenir.

While traveling in Danyang, I was wondering what to eat for dinner and wandered around Danyang Gugyeong Market (단양구경시장). Danyang is famous for black garlic, and apparently there's a nurungji (rice crust) dakgangjeong (fried chicken) with black garlic flavor that's popular here. I wanted it as a late-night snack at the accommodation, so I rushed straight over — here's my story of Danyang Heukmaneul Nurungji Dakgangjeong, a well-known spot in Danyang Gugyeong Market〰️
How to get to Danyang Gugyeong Market and where to park
Danyang Gugyeong Market has a public parking lot right in front, which made looking around really convenient. Parking matters a lot when traveling, so it was a nice bonus that Danyang was so easy on that front. Whenever I visit a region I can't skip checking out the local market, so I went looking for a good late-night snack at Danyang Gugyeong Market.

That's how I found the famous spot at Danyang Gugyeong Market, Danyang Heukmaneul Nurungji Dakgangjeong >.< I've seen plain dakgangjeong plenty of times, but black garlic dakgangjeong…? And black garlic nurungji dakgangjeong on top of that…?

Nurungji rice crust grilled in the shop
I noticed a staff member making the nurungji right there by hand. Nurungji made fresh on the spot like this!!!!
Since it was the first time I'd seen nurungji being made in person, I ended up just standing there watching, completely absorbed haha

Prices and flavors: original vs double black garlic, both 20,000 won
Black garlic nurungji dakgangjeong was ₩20,000 for either flavor. I was torn over which one to order haha

There was a tasting station before buying. Both the original flavor and the double black garlic flavor were set out to try. After tasting both, the double black garlic flavor definitely had a more noticeable black garlic aroma, and it was really appealing. So we ordered the double black garlic flavor. The black garlic flavor came through without being overwhelming, in a way that felt approachable — a taste people of all ages could enjoy.

Black garlic makgeolli to go with it
They were also selling black garlic makgeolli (rice wine). We happened to be planning to drink that evening, and since it was my first time seeing black garlic makgeolli, I wanted to try it as a Danyang trip souvenir, so we ordered that too.

Our order of double black garlic nurungji dakgangjeong and two bottles of black garlic makgeolli came out. Heading to the accommodation with both hands full, my heart felt so full, and I was already excited to eat the dakgangjeong 🙌

Double black garlic dakgangjeong as a late-night snack at the accommodation
After getting back to the room and washing up, we got ready to eat. Black garlic nurungji dakgangjeong paired with black garlic makgeolli — I thought, today I'm going to get drunk on black garlic >.<

Too much for two: eating the leftovers at home the next day
When we opened it up to eat, I was shocked by the amount. No wonder it felt so heavy — they'd given us a huge portion. My partner and I actually couldn't finish it, so when we headed home the next day we brought the leftovers along and ate them again as a late-night snack back home. Good dakgangjeong is supposed to taste even better once it cools down, and sure enough, it was even more delicious cold.

The chicken had plump meat inside and skin fried crispy all the way through, so it stayed delicious even cold — a textbook example of good dakgangjeong. On top of that, there was that black garlic aroma you can't find anywhere else, and the combination was perfect.

The nurungji, too — maybe because I'd seen it made by hand earlier — was crispy and went really well with the black garlic sauce. Alternating between the dakgangjeong and the nurungji, I just kept eating without end. My partner and I shared the black garlic makgeolli too, and with its subtle rice-wine aroma and sweetness, I kept drinking it until I ended up tipsy,,,,🫧
Danyang Heukmaneul Nurungji Dakgangjeong 🐓, the famous Danyang specialty I enjoyed on this trip — people of all ages, even little kids, can enjoy the black garlic flavor without any resistance, and the portion is generous enough to share with family. Highly recommend!!!
