Danyang road trip first meal: barley rice set at Heukmaneul Boribap
In short
Heukmaneul Boribap is a Korean set-meal restaurant at the entrance of the ssambap alley inside Gugyeong Market in Danyang, Chungbuk. As the first meal of a couple's drive trip through Danyang, we ordered the black garlic jeyuk (stir-fried pork) barley rice set for two and added bossam (boiled pork), which came with barley rice mixed with namul (seasoned vegetables), bossam in black garlic sauce and doenjang jjigae (soybean paste stew). The spread at Heukmaneul Boribap is mild and easy on the stomach, so it suits diners of any age.

My boyfriend and I came to Danyang, Chungbuk for a road trip getaway, and after the long drive we arrived starving and wanted a solid first meal. While looking for something with local character, someone recommended a Danyang must-eat spot, so we ended up at Heukmaneul Boribap (흑마늘보리밥). Here's how the healthy Korean meal went, parking info included!

How to get to Heukmaneul Boribap, and where to park

Heukmaneul Boribap sits right at the entrance of the ssambap alley if you walk a short way into Danyang Gugyeong Market, and it's not far from the bus terminal either, so it's a doable distance even for travelers on foot.
Right in front of the shop there's only room for one or two cars, so if there's no spot, we'd recommend just using the Gugyeong Market public parking lot about 100m away on foot instead of stressing over it.
What the dining room and menu at Heukmaneul Boribap are like
Walking inside, the place was clean and spacious overall — a great vibe for groups, families, or friends eating together.

Looking at the menu after sitting down, set meals featuring black garlic were the main lineup! We decided to order the black garlic jeyuk barley rice set for two and add bossam on top to make it even more filling. Worth noting in advance: the sets are only available starting from two people.
How do black garlic and barley rice taste together?

Neat side dishes and barley rice came out first, filling up the table — bracken fern, bean sprouts, seasoned radish, and a variety of other namul good for mixing into the barley rice.

Then the mains arrived in a generous spread — black garlic jeyuk stir-fry, bossam, and doenjang jjigae. Shall we start with the jeyuk?

No gamey smell from the meat at all, and the seasoning soaked in well, making it great to eat with rice.

Now let's build the bibimbap. Piling the namul evenly and adding several pieces of jeyuk already made it look great!

The key move here is adding a generous spoonful of what seemed like house-made gochujang (chili paste) haha.

Finishing it off with a swirl of sesame oil brings out a really fragrant, nutty aroma.
The gochujang wasn't overly sharp or spicy, so even young kids or older folks could eat it without worry, and the flavor was clean rather than heavy!

The crunchy texture of the namul paired so well with the barley rice that I kept reaching for more!

Is the extra bossam worth adding?
The bossam we added on came topped generously with black garlic sauce — the sauce was sweet with that distinct garlic flavor coming through, and it paired perfectly with the bossam!

The doenjang jjigae served alongside had a deep, savory flavor too, good for sipping between bites, and stirring it into the bibimbap gave it yet another layer of flavor.
Is Heukmaneul Boribap a good first meal in Danyang?
Overall it felt mild and healthy, and I finished the meal in a genuinely good mood ❤ The Danyang Heukmaneul Boribap spread, made with wholesome ingredients and clearly put together with care, was more than enough to add to the joy of the trip! Thanks to the jeyuk and bossam — deep in flavor without being harsh — I felt like this is a place anyone, any age, could enjoy haha. If you're looking for a hearty yet easy-on-the-stomach barley rice set in Danyang, definitely stop by here when you visit Gugyeong Market~
