Gwangjin Korean BBQ with unlimited wraps and sides: Ssamchae

In short

Ssamchae Sotttukkeong Samgyeopsal is a Korean BBQ restaurant in Gwangjin, Seoul. I ordered three portions of pork belly grilled by staff, with unlimited wrap vegetables and side dishes from the self-serve bar, then finished with cold buckwheat noodles for 5,000 won. A wonderfully easy place to pile on the wraps and sides without holding back.

The day I had pot-lid pork belly near Guui Station

Because it has not been open for long, the restaurant was incredibly clean to begin with!

How far is it from Guui Station?

It is about a 10-minute walk from Guui Station!

Hours are 12:00–24:00 every day, with last orders at 23:00. We had arranged to meet at noon on a Saturday, and when we arrived, two family groups were already eating! It felt like a real local favorite for people who live near Guui Station!

Here is the interior. Since it has not been open long, it is really pleasant, and there was not much smoke either.

There is also quite a lot of space toward the back, so I recommend it, recommend it for company dinners, groups, and get-togethers!

Here is the menu! Unusually, you can choose between a pot-lid grill and a charcoal brazier here, and you can switch once as well! I absolutely love grilling kimchi on a pot lid, so I asked for that. Honestly, it is so convenient because if you want that smoky flavor partway through, you can just switch to the charcoal brazier.

For a Seoul pork belly place, the prices are pretty reasonable too. Pork belly, marinated pork ribs, pork neck, and whole pork skirt meat are all ₩17,000. There were so many meat options that I seriously debated getting a set, but went, “The classic is pork belly!” and ordered three portions.

The self-serve bar for unlimited wrap vegetables and side dishes

And then, the long-awaited wrap vegetable & side dish self-serve bar!!! I loved being able to eat all those assorted vegetables, which cost more than meat these days, generously and without feeling self-conscious..

Since I am on a diet, I really loved it.. I layered several leaves into wraps with the meat, and it was so delicious and kept me full for a long time! It somehow felt healthy.. haha

Also, I am someone who comes to pork belly places because I love having side dishes with my meat, and this place has so many sides..ㅠㅠ There were especially myeonginamul (seasoned wild garlic leaves), bean sprouts, kimchi, green onion kimchi, mushrooms, onions, and more—to the point where I wondered whether the owner was making anything at all..? They had all the popular sides ready, and they are such a perfect match when grilled.

There are plenty of things to dip into, too, including salt, ssamjang (seasoned soybean paste), and curry powder!

Three portions of pork belly grilled by the staff

And the best part..! The staff grill it for you. At this level of quality, with these prices and side dishes, they grill it for you too..? I seriously loved it. The friends I went with were completely satisfied too, which made me feel proud..!

The staff member was incredibly kind too. They were a foreign national, and I remember them for being so professional and friendly.

Here are the three portions of pork belly! It looks fresh at a glance, right? It was nice and thick, with a great balance of fat and lean meat! It even had a little rind, almost like ogyeopsal (five-layer pork belly), so it was completely my style.

They cut it into easy-to-eat pieces. The heat was strong, so the pork belly cooked quickly, and the green onion kimchi here.. there is green onion kimchi too, and it is insanely good grilled! It was not overly fermented and did not have an overpowering salted-seafood smell, which was totally my taste.

Ta-da~ The meat browned up beautifully, and we piled our wraps and side dishes high and enjoyed them with the meat.

Ahh.. I actually prefer being able to bring things over myself without feeling self-conscious, and the side dishes were especially tasty. There were so many kinds of wraps, all self-serve, so I think I mindlessly loaded up without worrying at all! The pork belly was generous for the price too, so I got full surprisingly quickly!

Mul naengmyeon ordered to finish the meal

Finishing with mul naengmyeon

Finally, we cleansed our palates with mul naengmyeon (cold buckwheat noodles in broth)! At ₩5,000, the mul naengmyeon is such a great value too. It was cool, a fairly standard naengmyeon flavor, but definitely not bad!

Why I want to go back

Ssamchae Sotttukkeong Samgyeopsal, about a 10-minute walk from Guui Station, was truly great value! Staff grilling service, varied unlimited wrap vegetables, a choice of grill, fresh and delicious meat, and a pleasant space. Everything was perfect here. We ate so well with our friends and left saying we should come back next time! The service was so good too, so I highly recommend it as an easy, no-pressure place to eat :)!!
