Late-night yangtang and seolleongtang at Hanwoojang, Daegu

In short

Hanwoojang is a 24-hour gukbap (Korean soup with rice) restaurant on Gukchebosang-ro in Jung-gu, Daegu, running since 1968. After a late-night recording session, the writer and friends ordered yangtang (tripe soup), seolleongtang (ox bone soup), and ttaro-gukbap (beef soup with rice served separately) for a late-night meal, paired with kimchi and crunchy pepper banchan. The broth was rich yet light, making it a solid pick for both late-night eats and hangover recovery.

After wrapping up a late-night recording session, I came here with some friends for late-night food — a gukbap place near Jungangno Station in Daegu, close to Manggyeonggwan Megabox. It's Hanwoojang, open 24 hours.

When you're hungry, gukbap really does it. Even late at night, there were quite a few customers filling their stomachs. There was a wide variety of gukbap — seolleongtang, ttaro-gukbap, doganitang, yangtang — and they also sell suyuk.

It's been a Blue Ribbon Survey recommended restaurant for 12 years running, so if you live in Daegu, Hanwoojang is a must-visit.

An old-school vibe going back to 1968

A traditional Daegu gukbap restaurant running since 1968. I loved the vintage feel of the place. It has that warm, nostalgic old-restaurant atmosphere. Overall the place is spacious and comfortable, so it's also a good spot for work dinners or group gatherings in Daegu.

Looks like a lot of celebrities have visited too — there were photos and signatures on the wall. I meant to look at them properly after eating but forgot and just left, haha.

Banchan refills at the self-serve bar

The staff set out the initial banchan, and if you want more, you can refill at the self-serve bar. The banchan plates are all there too. I was too eager and rushed straight over at first, but a staff member calmed me down and said they'd bring it for me, lol.

We ordered seolleongtang and ttaro-gukbap, and I ordered yangtang. While waiting for the food, I looked around the place and thought I should try the suyuk next time. There are also bigger portion options like special seolleongtang and special ttaro-gukbap, so you can eat a really hearty meal.

The crunchy pepper banchan goes really well with gukbap. When I was a kid, I never understood why adults ate this, but these days I get it. Crunchy and sharp — perfect for whetting your appetite.

Since I ordered yangtang, they gave us onion sauce to eat alongside it.

The kimchi at Hanwoojang, this gukbap spot in Daegu, that I just kept reaching for! It's genuinely delicious. Goes perfectly with gukbap, a total rice thief. I almost ate two bowls of rice because of it, haha.

First try of yangtang: cleared the broth with rice

My bowl of yangtang. Yang is apparently the cow's first stomach. People who like offal would probably enjoy it a lot. This was my first time trying yangtang, and the tripe itself wasn't quite my style, so I gave it to my friends — but the broth was so good I mixed in rice and finished it all, haha.

A hot bowl of rice came out too. Rice on its own is tasty, but with gukbap, mixing it into the soup is really the way to go.

The broth is genuinely rich and satisfying. I think gukbap is the best choice for a late-night meal. It goes down easily without feeling heavy, which also makes it great for a hangover. Mixing in a bowl of rice with kimchi on top is pure honey-flavored bliss.

Seolleongtang at Hanwoojang topped with scallions

Seolleongtang: good for meat lovers

This is the seolleongtang my friend ordered. Think of it as a standard meat gukbap. The crunchy scallions on top of the seolleongtang are also delicious. If you're like me and prefer meat over offal, seolleongtang would be perfect. Looking at the photo again is making me hungry, haha.

There's also a generous amount of thin noodles inside, so adding rice on top makes for a really filling meal. I think I'll be craving hot seolleongtang often. There was no separate seasoning sauce added inside, and my friend enjoyed it with kkakdugi (cubed radish kimchi).

Eating seolleongtang together with pepper banchan

A bite of seolleongtang followed by a crunchy pepper bite — mm, that's the good stuff. Food really is best when you're hungry.

Ttaro-gukbap: sundae blood cake and a spicy kick

This is the ttaro-gukbap another friend ordered. It looked mouthwatering just to see. It came topped with plenty of minced garlic seasoning. Anything with garlic is bound to be delicious.

It has seonji (congealed ox blood) inside, so people who like seonji would enjoy the ttaro-gukbap. I'm not great with seonji, but it was funny how well my friend ate it. He said it wasn't too spicy but had a nice kick, and it was delicious. He also ended up mixing in a bowl of rice and finishing it all, haha.

Wrap-up

Hanwoojang, a gukbap spot in Daegu with tradition dating back to 1968. With its rich, clean broth paired with kimchi, it made for a satisfying meal whether as late-night food or hangover recovery. With a variety of menu options like seolleongtang, ttaro-gukbap, and yangtang, there was plenty to choose from depending on your taste, and I'd like to come back next time to try the suyuk as well.
