Gwangju café for ang-butter gaeseongjuak and sweet lattes: Hoyang Horim

In short

Hoyang Horim is a hanok café in Nam-gu, Gwangju. I had ang-butter gaeseongjuak, sweet potato injeolmi waffles, and lattes in its quiet courtyard and wood-toned seating. Verdict: a lovely stop for a quiet break with traditional sweets and sweet lattes.

Hoyang Horim, a lovely place to rest in a hanok courtyard

Hanok café exterior
Café entrance with a tiled-roof-house feel

True to its hanok café identity, the entrance immediately has that tiled-roof-house feeling. It feels a little like visiting Grandma’s house—warm and welcoming, and great for photos too.

Once you enter, there’s a courtyard. The hanok plus the trees make the atmosphere feel even prettier.

  • There are tables and floor cushions set up for eating outside.
  • It would be so nice to eat in the courtyard in spring or fall.
  • There’s even an umbrella stand that suits the hanok atmosphere.
  • The tables, chairs, and cushions are all so stylish,,
  • The wood-toned interior and hanok elements go really well together.
  • Such a nice place to take a break in a quiet atmosphere.

The coloring activity is such a blast from the past,, it takes me back to childhood. There are tissues and water too.

There are plenty of cushions and blankets, so feel free to get comfortable. The little objects placed around the café and the lighting go so well together—the owner has amazing interior-design sense. There’s also a huge mirror in front of the restroom, so it’s great for photos.

Appetizing desserts and drinks
Ang-butter gaeseongjuak dessert

The ang-butter gaeseongjuak combines chewy, sweet gaeseongjuak with sweet red bean paste and butter. It’s a flavor parents and grandparents would really love too. The chewiness of the gaeseongjuak and sweetness of the red bean pair so well with coffee. It’s tiny and cute-looking too.

Latte and sweet pumpkin injeolmi waffle

The condensed milk cinnamon latte has a sweet condensed-milk-and-cinnamon combination, so cinnamon lovers will really like it. The sweet pumpkin injeolmi waffle is a crisp waffle topped with a scoop of vanilla ice cream—that’s the key! The sweet pumpkin with cold ice cream is incredible!! The cream on top of the house-made vanilla latte is amazing!! It’s so delicious; I totally recommend it! The vanilla and milk blend beautifully, making it sweet and smooth.
