Since my baby has an egg allergy, I tend to be careful with bread and snacks containing eggs. So naturally, we often ate tteok (Korean rice cakes) as snacks from an early age, and even now my child really loves seeing tteok.

A rice cake shop in Ulsan’s Sinjeong-dong for children’s snacks

I thought it would be nice to buy the children some tteok they usually enjoy, so today I visited Baekho Tteokbang (백호떡방) in Sinjeong-dong, Ulsan.

This was my first visit to Baekho Tteokbang, but the huge “tteok” written on the window made it easy to spot even while passing by. When I visit somewhere new, I tend to look around for the sign, but with such a large display on the window 👀 even first-time visitors like me can find it easily!

Rice cakes and house-made drinks to choose by ingredient

When I stepped inside, it was decorated more sweetly than I expected. Perhaps because the shop is called Baekho Tteokbang, a cute white tiger figurine also caught my eye.

As I looked around the shop, I checked out the rice cakes one by one. There was a nice variety with fun names, such as Baekho Tteok, Heukho Tteok, Ssukho Tteok, and Gureum Tteok. The flavors vary a little depending on ingredients such as pumpkin, black sesame, and mugwort, so it looked fun to choose among them. They also sold house-made drinks that go well with tteok, including pumpkin milk and pumpkin sikhye (a sweet rice punch).

Castella-coated pumpkin injeolmi Baekho Tteok

We ordered one small Baekho Tteok and one large one for a gift! My whole family happens to love tteok, so I was looking forward to finding out what Baekho Tteokbang’s Baekho Tteok would taste like.

It was soft pumpkin injeolmi coated in castella cake crumbs. I loved the signature chewy texture of tteok, and it was not too heavy to eat as a breakfast substitute, so it was nice to share with the children.

Both my six-year-old and three-year-old, as well as me, enjoyed it so much.

Bojagi-wrapped rice cake gifts for Chuseok

Another thing I liked about Baekho Tteokbang was that gift wrapping is available. Rather than simply taking the tteok away in packaging, you can have it wrapped in bojagi (traditional Korean wrapping cloth), which makes it feel a little more thoughtful. I think it would be lovely to prepare as a gift for the upcoming Chuseok holiday!!

At Chuseok, I always find myself wondering what gift to give parents or people close to me. Tteok is easy for people of all ages to enjoy, and wrapped beautifully in bojagi, I think it would convey the giver’s feelings well. Especially if you are looking for a Chuseok gift that is a little different from the usual gift set but still practical, a rice cake gift could be a good choice.

After this visit, I felt Baekho Tteokbang was a nice place to stop by for a simple snack ✅, to find tteok to eat with children ✅, or to prepare a gift for parents or acquaintances ✅. I hope this helps anyone looking for tteok as a children’s snack like me, or wondering about an upcoming Chuseok gift. :)
