Gwanghwamun Korean restaurant with free parking, toddler-friendly

In short

SABAL is a modern Korean restaurant in Jongno, Seoul, in the Gyeonghuigung-ui-achim Complex 3 retail building between Gyeongbokgung and Gwanghwamun stations. The writer ordered the gamtae (seaweed) perilla oil bibimbap with mini noodles (₩17,000) and the gamtae perilla oil bibim noodles (₩17,000), and received complimentary grain tea and sweet pumpkin porridge; her 17-month-old son ate the mini noodles especially well. With the first hour of parking free at the building, SABAL is an easy Gwanghwamun lunch even if you drive.

With the weather so nice these days, so many people are heading out around Gyeongbokgung and Seochon, right? Today I want to share my honest review of SABAL, a modern Korean restaurant near Gyeongbokgung and Gwanghwamun that serves refined, upscale Korean food.

First look at SABAL, a modern Korean restaurant near Gwanghwamun

This place has held its ground in the same spot since 2008 and even got featured on the TV show Suyo Misikhwe for its clean, subtle flavors! From the thoughtfully prepared porridge to the main bibimbap that just exploded with nuttiness, let's get into it honestly ✨

Where is SABAL? A 3-minute walk from Gyeongbokgung Station exit 7

Direction toward SABAL's entrance inside the Gyeonghuigung-ui-achim Complex 3 arcade

Known for its Gyeongbokgung-style hanjeongsik (Korean set meal), SABAL sits right between Gyeongbokgung Station and Gwanghwamun Station, so it's really convenient to reach by public transit.

  • Address: 34 Sajik-ro 8-gil, Jongno-gu, Seoul, Gyeonghuigung-ui-achim Complex 3, Unit 142, SABAL
  • About 3 minutes' walk (278m) from Line 3 Gyeongbokgung Station exit 7
  • Also reachable on foot from Line 5 Gwanghwamun Station exit 1

A little walking tip: go into the first-floor retail arcade of 'Gyeonghuigung-ui-achim Complex 3,' directly across from the front gate of the Seoul Metropolitan Police Agency! Come in through the side door next to Gyeonghuigung Oriental Medicine Clinic or the revolving door next to Myeongseong Real Estate, and it's right there.

Parking at SABAL: first hour free in the Complex 3 retail lot

🚗 Parking around Gwanghwamun and Seochon is genuinely tough, which usually makes me hesitant to drive, but SABAL has access to a spacious building parking lot, which made things really easy!

  • Parking lot: 'Gyeonghuigung-ui-achim Complex 3 officetel/retail parking'
  • Parking benefit: first hour free (up to 2 hours free depending on purchase amount and wait time)
  • If you need extra time, you can also buy a parking discount voucher at the restaurant — ask when you visit!

Inside SABAL: terrace seats and group tables for 5 to 8

🌿 Stepping inside SABAL, you're greeted with a calm black-toned interior where tradition and modernity blend stylishly.

Tasteful potted plants and ceramic pieces touched by various artists are displayed throughout, giving it almost a gallery-like feel.

There are terrace seats perfect for a leisurely chat, plus standing group tables that fit 5 to 8 people. It's a great spot for family gatherings, catching up with friends, dates, or even office lunch meetings.

Complimentary starters: grain tea and sweet pumpkin porridge

🥣 Once you sit down at SABAL, instead of plain water they serve grain tea brewed for a long time from barley, corn, and Solomon's seal root. The moment I took a sip, I felt calmer, and the toasty aroma was lovely.

These three were the side dishes. That was an unusually shaped garlic pickle!

The sweet pumpkin porridge served before the main course was also memorable. It wasn't overly sweet, just soft, carefully made porridge — perfect for waking up the appetite before the meal.

What the gamtae perilla oil bibimbap with mini noodles (₩17,000) tastes like

🥢 On this visit at SABAL I ordered the gamtae (seaweed) perilla oil bibimbap + mini noodles set (₩17,000) and the gamtae perilla oil bibim noodles (₩17,000). SABAL is famous for using artisan-made suyeon somyeon noodles, deep broth simmered from anchovy and chicken, and the best-quality rice!

Table setting of gamtae perilla oil bibimbap and mini noodle set

Served in a neat brassware-style bowl, it comes generously loaded with well-cooked rice, sautéed mushrooms, egg strips, seaweed flakes, sesame salt, and an overflowing amount of nutty perilla oil.

Tear off a bit of the green gamtae they give you and lay it on top of the bibimbap, take a bite... and the nutty perilla oil flavor mixes with gamtae's salty, oceanic taste for an absolute festival in your mouth. It's not overpowering, feels healthy, and is addictively good — you just keep going!

Eating out with a 17-month-old: the mini noodles were a hit

The mini noodles that came with the set were also based on a warm, deep anchovy broth, and paired cleanly with the nutty bibimbap — the best combo. My 17-month-old son ate this so well!

The gamtae perilla oil bibim noodles (₩17,000) too

It has a similar feel but rice and noodles are completely different, so I ordered the bibim noodles too. Same toppings, but the noodles made for a whole different dish! Wrapping them in gamtae and taking a big bite is really satisfying.

Is SABAL worth it? Verdict and tips for your visit

💡 SABAL checked all three boxes — clean, healthy flavors, a stylish and upscale atmosphere, and friendly service. Since it's popular, I'd recommend booking through Naver Reservation or Catch Table! Zero Pay and mobile local currency payments are also accepted.

If you're looking for a refined Gyeongbokgung-style hanjeongsik restaurant, want a light and elegant Korean meal near Gwanghwamun, or are searching for a pleasant lunch spot in Seochon, give SABAL a try!

+ If you have a big appetite, the portions might feel a bit small!
