Green tea sotbap and bori-gulbi at a Gwanghwamun meeting lunch: Modam

In short

Modam Dining Gwanghwamun is a Korean set-menu (hanjeongsik) restaurant with partitioned hall seats and private rooms on B1 of Deoksugung D-Palace, by Exit 6 of Gwanghwamun Station in Jongno, Seoul. Looking for a somewhat formal place to eat, the writer ordered the bori-gulbi (barley-aged dried yellow croaker) set with bulgogi added, and the sotbap (stone-pot rice) soaked in cold green tea water and topped with a piece of bori-gulbi was the best combination of the meal. Modam Dining Gwanghwamun was chosen for the atmosphere, but the food is what left the writer wanting to return.

First photo from the visit to Modam Dining Gwanghwamun

Whenever I need to eat somewhere a bit more formal near Gwanghwamun, I always end up quietly stressing over where to go. If it's an important meeting or a conversation that needs focus, the food matters, but so does whether the surroundings are too noisy. On the other hand, an overly formal hanjeongsik (Korean set-course meal) place can be a lot in terms of price or time. Looking for somewhere comfortable without being too casual, I found Modam Dining Gwanghwamun, known for its calm mood and tidy Korean food, and went to check it out.

Where is Modam Dining Gwanghwamun, and what is the mood like?

Modam Dining Gwanghwamun is on B1 of Deoksugung D-Palace, close to Exit 6 of Gwanghwamun Station on Line 5. It's easy to find from the station, and the building itself is clean, which made it feel like a fine place to meet someone for the first time. I also liked that it's a bit removed from the busy center of Gwanghwamun — it felt less chaotic, so moving around before and after the meal was fairly relaxed.

Taking the escalator down to the basement and reaching the entrance, the whole space had a modern yet subtly Korean feel. It wasn't flashy — more calm and neat. The staff were polite while confirming my reservation and showing me to my seat, so I got a stable impression from the moment I walked in.

Further inside, the hall and rooms were separated, and the spacing between tables was fairly generous. The hall seats had partitions too, so it wasn't a layout where you'd make direct eye contact with the next table, and nearby conversations weren't too distracting. For anyone wanting a quieter meal, there are also private rooms you can close the door on — good for family gatherings or important meetings.

The lighting wasn't overly bright either, more on the soft side, which made it easy to talk with whoever I was sitting across from. It didn't have the heavy feel typical of some Korean restaurants, but it wasn't as light as a casual eatery either — personally, I'd say it landed right in the middle.

₩19,900 weekday lunch sotbap, and why the bori-gulbi set won out

Looking at the menu, weekday lunch offers a single sotbap dish for ₩19,900. Given the location and atmosphere, that's not a very burdensome price for lunch. This time I wanted a proper meal, so I ordered the bori-gulbi set and added bulgogi on top.

After ordering, the side dishes came out one by one, each neatly plated — it looked great. There were various namul (seasoned vegetables) and other sides, leaning toward mild rather than salty or strong flavors. Personally, with Korean food, if even one side dish is too salty or too sweet, the whole meal can feel heavy, but there was little of that concern here.

The bori-gulbi kept its distinctive chewy texture while the flesh inside was moister than I expected. Most importantly, there was almost no fishy or overly strong smell, which made it easy to eat. There's definitely the salty flavor characteristic of bori-gulbi, but it wasn't overly intense.

It went especially well with the sotbap. After scooping out some rice, I soaked it in cool green tea water and topped it with a piece of bori-gulbi — the salty fish and the subtle bitterness of the green tea matched really well. It's a dish where the flavor fully comes through with rice alone, without any strong seasoning, so if you like bori-gulbi, this would likely be very much to your taste.

The bulgogi was a familiar style — thinly sliced meat well coated in a sweet-savory sauce. The meat was tender rather than tough, which made it good to pile on rice, and the seasoning wasn't overly sweet either, so it didn't feel like too much. Since the bori-gulbi is on the salty side, if the bulgogi's seasoning were also strong, the whole meal could feel overwhelming, but eating both together, the flavors didn't clash.

Came to Modam Dining Gwanghwamun for the mood, staying for the food

As I ate that day, I was honestly surprised at how much better the food was than expected. I'd gone thinking the space would suit an important meal, but once I actually ate, the food left a stronger impression than the space did. In particular, the combination of bori-gulbi with sotbap soaked in green tea water really suited my taste, and from the side dishes to the main dish, nothing was over-seasoned — the ingredients' own flavors came through clearly.

I kept saying how good it was with the person I went with, and by the end of the meal I was already thinking I'd come back next time I need Korean food in Gwanghwamun. If I had to put a number on how likely I am to return, I'd say 500% — that's how much I enjoyed it. I went in for a mood suited to an important meal, but I left wanting to come back purely for the taste.

Service and 2 hours of free parking at Deoksugung D-Palace

One thing I liked during the meal was the service. Instead of constantly asking if I needed water or more side dishes, the staff quietly took care of things at the right moments, which was actually more comfortable. Clearing empty dishes didn't interrupt the flow of the meal either, so it was easy to stay focused on the conversation.

Parking is convenient if you're driving. Park on basement level 3 of D-Palace and Modam Dining customers get 2 hours free by default. Parking near Gwanghwamun is always a concern when setting up a meal, so being able to use the building's parking lot was a plus.

That said, if you want a private room, reservations can fill up fast on weekends or at peak meal times, so it's worth booking ahead. The hall is fairly calm too, but if you really want a quiet space to talk, reserving a room is more comfortable.

Overall, Modam Dining Gwanghwamun wasn't too casual, but it also wasn't so formal that the meal itself felt like a burden. With a clean space, private rooms available, and neatly prepared food, it was a good match for setting the tone with someone important. Most of all, the food that day was far tastier than I expected, and it left a lasting impression.

If you're looking for a place near Gwanghwamun with a bit of a formal mood for an important meeting or family meal, this would certainly suit that, but even without that purpose, it's a place I'd want to revisit on a day I simply crave good Korean food. The bori-gulbi and sotbap combination in particular really won me over, and I'd love to try other menu items next time. I enjoyed the meal so much that day that my return-visit intention is at 500%. If you're ever in the mood for a tidy Korean meal near Gwanghwamun, this is a place you'll likely find yourself coming back to.
