Friday dinner black pork bbq with breadcrumb salt: Nopo Dwaeji Aewol
In short
Nopo Dwaeji Aewol is a black pork barbecue restaurant near Gwakji Beach in Aewol, Jeju. Visiting on a Friday evening with a reservation for three, the writer ordered 600g of black pork geungogi (thick-cut pork) and Jeju yellow crab doenjang stew, with staff grilling pork belly and neck on charcoal and cutting them to size. Dipped in breadcrumb salt and melजeot (fermented anchovy sauce), the pork disappeared faster than usual — a solid stop to add to an Aewol itinerary.

Where is it in Aewol?
It's located near Gwakji Beach in Aewol and close to Handam Beach, making it a great stop when you're traveling around the Aewol area. We had lunch in Hyeopjae, spent time at cafés around Aewol, and came here for dinner as part of our route.

Friday evening — a wait without a reservation?
We visited around 6:30pm on a Friday, and it seemed like you might have to wait without a reservation. There's group seating too, so quite a few groups seemed to have reservations. They looked like locals from Jeju, and I figured — if locals come here for group dinners, it must be a real local favorite, haha.

We had a reservation for three, and the table was already set up like this when we arrived. If you reserve ahead, you can start eating pork quickly, so I'd recommend booking in advance~~

Menu and ordering
The main dish is black pork geungogi (thick-cut pork, 600g), with pork neck/belly add-ons available at 400g, and skirt meat or jowl at 200g each. Keep in mind — single-portion add-ons are only possible for the specialty cuts, skirt meat and jowl!!
Besides the grilled pork, there's also a range of meal dishes: Jeju yellow crab doenjang stew, 24-hour aged kimchi stew, bibim hoe naengmyeon (spicy raw fish cold noodles), and mul naengmyeon (cold noodle soup). What I loved was that the rice wasn't plain — it was kelp rice, cooked with kelp for extra umami!! Nice touch from the owner haha. Just looking at the menu made me think the meat would be delicious too~ We ordered the black pork geungogi and the Jeju yellow crab doenjang stew.

Side dishes and sauces
Here's the side dish spread — clean and nice. The dressed lettuce salad and baek kimchi (white kimchi) were both delicious, and alongside them were pickled radish, seasoned vegetables, and pickled hot peppers — all there to keep the pork from feeling too heavy. For sauces, there was wasabi, ssamjang (dipping sauce), and breadcrumb salt — I'd never seen breadcrumb salt before.

Geungogi grilled by staff over charcoal
The geungogi we ordered came out, and a staff member put it straight onto the charcoal grill. It's pre-seared over straw fire, so the meat already had some color on it!
They cut the pork neck into big chunks and the pork belly into bite-sized pieces, grilling everything with real skill — I couldn't stop swallowing. We were like hungry hyenas just waiting for it to cook.

The pork neck, cut large to keep the juices in, gets sliced into bite-sized pieces once it's fully grilled.

Pork neck dipped in breadcrumb salt
They told us to try the well-grilled pork neck dipped in breadcrumb salt first~! I dipped a piece just in the salt and took a bite. The savory flavor unique to black pork rises up with the juices. Maybe because of the breadcrumbs mixed in, but the surface of the meat felt even crispier?? A properly crispy-outside, juicy-inside moment!!

Jeju yellow crab doenjang stew and pork belly
The Jeju yellow crab doenjang stew arrived too. It has a whole yellow crab in it, plus tofu, zucchini, onion, and green onion — a really refreshing-tasting stew! Exactly the flavor of grandma's doenjang stew!
The pork belly was grilled beautifully too. The fat layer had rendered down nicely, leaving just the collagen-rich bits on top, haha.

You can't have black pork barbecue without beer. Having a glass in between resets your palate so you can keep eating, haha.

Melजeot, wraps, and final thoughts
We did the classic Korean thing of wrapping meat in lettuce with perilla leaf, garlic, and ssamjang. The side dishes had that clean, modern spread that keeps you from getting sick of the meat, and they put melजeot (fermented anchovy sauce) right on the grill for dipping — the savory depth it added meant I ate more pork than usual. They grilled everything cleanly and cut it into easy-to-eat pieces, and since it's located right around the middle of Aewol, I was glad we added it to our itinerary.
If you're looking for a black pork restaurant in Aewol where the staff grills for you, I recommend Nopo Dwaeji Aewol!!
