Gangnam café, salted caramel cream latte and tiramisu: Upper and Under

In short

Upper and Under is a large dessert café in Gangnam, Seoul, a five-minute walk from Exit 6 of Sinnonhyeon Station, with seating from basement level 1 up to the 2nd floor. On a holiday afternoon I took a 1st-floor window seat at Upper and Under and ordered tiramisu, crème brûlée flan, a salted caramel cream latte and an iced café latte. Even with plenty of customers, the tables are spaced far enough apart that it never felt crowded, and both the coffee and the desserts were worth the trip.

Today I'm introducing Upper and Under, a Sinnonhyeon Station café packed with eye-candy desserts. It's a big three-floor café with an outdoor terrace, and the indoor space felt spacious too — loved it!

Where is Upper and Under, and what are its hours?

Upper and Under, this Sinnonhyeon Station café, is a five-minute walk from Exit 6 of Sinnonhyeon Station! It's open daily 11:00-22:00, with Wi-Fi, takeout/delivery, and group seating available too.

From outside, the basement level looks just like a ground floor with tables set up, but you have to head up the stairs to find the order counter and bakery display.

With the weather this nice lately, sitting outside would be so lovely :)

What the 1st floor feels like on a holiday afternoon

Below is the 1st floor of Upper and Under. Being a holiday, it was a bit busy, but there was still an open table so we sat down right away.

The first thing that caught my eye stepping into the 1st floor was the colorful cakes lined up inside the refrigerated display case haha

Across from it were rows and rows of baked goods and desserts, and I kept seeing staff bring out fresh trays from the kitchen to refill the empty spots! With the place this busy, it felt like things were constantly disappearing and constantly being restocked, haha

Head up the interior stairs to the 2nd floor and you'll find another spacious café area with outdoor terrace seats too, just so you know^^

We sat by the window on the 1st floor. The weather had cooled down a bit, but the AC inside was blasting pretty hard, haha. It was a great spot to zone out and stare out the window😁

Upper and Under menu: signature cream coffees and cakes

What caught my eye most at Upper and Under, this Sinnonhyeon café, was the range of signature cream coffees and drinks.

  • Einspänner
  • Salted caramel
  • Pistachio
  • Matcha cream oat latte
  • Matcha pistachio
  • Coconut matcha

For cakes there was tiramisu, lemon, Earl Grey grapefruit, raspberry, and even an in-season fig cake — plus I spotted a yellow cheese Basque cheesecake!

What's in the bakery case at Upper and Under

On top of that, the bakery lineup had plain/salted chocolate/pistachio financiers, nunette/candied sweet potato/yellow cheese financiers, double vanilla/vanilla/matcha canelés, pistachio/Earl Grey canelés, fig pie, chocolate banana pie, crème brûlée flan, caramel cheese pie, lemon madeleines, Earl Grey fig madeleines, and more!

The four things we ordered at Upper and Under

✅️ Tiramisu ✅️ Crème brûlée flan ✅️ Salted caramel cream latte ✅️ (Iced) café latte

Tiramisu and iced café latte

At first I was drawn to the pretty fruit cakes, but my partner loves tiramisu, so we picked Upper and Under's tiramisu!

A slice of Upper and Under's tiramisu

The tiramisu had a good-looking build — two soft sponge layers with a thick pile of cream on top!

The tiramisu wasn't as sweet as I expected, which I liked, and it paired well with my partner's iced café latte! The coffee wasn't too bitter — a smooth, nutty latte :)

Salted caramel cream latte: how sweet is it?

Since I'd gone and ordered a sweet cream latte, I kept stealing my partner's latte while eating tiramisu haha. I got the salted caramel cream — I was somehow craving something more bold that day, so I gave it a try.

Doesn't it look so tempting? haha

The salted caramel came piled with cream! I scooped some up with the wooden spoon that came with it — thick, sweet-and-salty cream flavor! It was so good I had to recommend it to my partner too haha

And eating the cream together with the coffee underneath matched perfectly with the bitter, nutty coffee flavor — exactly the taste I was after!^^

Crème brûlée flan

Last up, the crème brûlée flan!

Upper and Under's crème brûlée flan

You've gotta crack the crème brûlée top first, right? haha It was a bit firm, so it took a little pressure to crack!

Cutting it in half revealed vanilla bean flecks dotted all through the inside! It looked so moist and soft at a glance, and the custard cream just melted away in my mouth! Nutty and so, so good, haha

Who Upper and Under suits best

Even with the place full of customers, the tables were spaced out enough that it didn't feel too crowded — I really liked that!

The coffee and desserts were both delicious, and if you're looking for a dessert café near Gangnam Station or Sinnonhyeon Station, I recommend Upper and Under!^^
