Gyeongbokgung café for brûlée lemon and cheese baum: The Baum

In short

The Baum Gyeongbokgung Branch is a German baumkuchen dessert café on Jahamun-ro near Gyeongbokgung Station in Jongno, Seoul. The writer ordered three kinds of baumkuchen — brûlée lemon baum, cheese baum and choco eiffel baum — with an iced americano, and sat comfortably thanks to the widely spaced seating spread over the first and second floors. Of the baumkuchen tried here for the first time, the favorite was the brûlée lemon baum, whose caramelized top you crack with a spoon.

What kind of café is The Baum Gyeongbokgung Branch?

The Baum Gyeongbokgung Branch is a premium German-style baumkuchen dessert specialty shop on Jahamun-ro near Gyeongbokgung Station. On a nice day, I was strolling around the quiet, old-fashioned Gyeongbokgung area when I started craving something sweet, so I made my way over.

It's already a well-known dessert spot near Gyeongbokgung, and true to its reputation as a signature dessert destination for the area, it was a treat for both the eyes and the mouth.

Choosing from the menu: so many kinds of baumkuchen

The showcase was packed with all sorts of delicious-looking baumkuchen, and after much deliberation I ordered three: brûlée lemon baum, cheese baum, and choco eiffel baum, along with a cool iced americano.

The Baum is located right near Gyeongbokgung Station, so accessibility was really great. Cafés in the Seochon or Gyeongbokgung area tend to be cute but cramped, so I was genuinely surprised at how big and spacious The Baum was the moment I walked in. The seating spacing was generous and the open feel meant I could stay comfortably without feeling cramped. It's not easy to find such a large, comfortable café near Gyeongbokgung Station, so this space is a big advantage for chatting leisurely or just resting.

Three baumkuchen and an iced americano on the table

How did our first baumkuchen taste?

Honestly, this was the first time I'd properly tried baumkuchen, and I was completely won over from the first bite by the softness and chewiness of the layers baked with such care!

Cross-section of the finely layered baumkuchen

I had no idea baumkuchen came in so many varieties, and it truly lived up to its reputation as a top dessert spot near Gyeongbokgung Station! My favorite was the brûlée lemon baum!

Brûlée lemon baum: crack the caramelized top

The brûlée lemon baum was fun to eat — cracking open the crisp, caramelized top was satisfying. Beneath the sweet, slightly bitter brûlée coating was a fresh, fragrant lemon cream filling that refreshed the palate perfectly. This is a must-order at The Baum! You won't regret it~

Choco eiffel baum and cheese baum

The choco eiffel baum was also delicious, with a rich, deep chocolate sweetness. It wasn't artificially sweet — the luxurious cacao flavor melted into the layers of the baumkuchen, giving a real sugar boost.

The cheese baum is a mini-sized baum with a thick, rich cheese filling packed into the center of the ring. This one was also genuinely delicious — the savory, smooth cheese flavor spread through the mouth and paired perfectly with the buttery bread layers. It's a flavor everyone would like, so I'd recommend it!

Pairing these sweet, rich baumkuchen with a clean, cool iced americano balanced out the sweetness perfectly — an amazing combination that I could have kept eating endlessly.

Is The Baum good for a Gyeongbokgung outing or date?

It was a satisfying time being able to enjoy special, high-quality desserts in a spacious, comfortable setting. If you're planning a walk around Gyeongbokgung or a date course, I'd definitely recommend stopping by The Baum Gyeongbokgung Branch, a well-known dessert spot near Gyeongbokgung!
