Gangneung gelato café with a large soft tofu-corn cup: Hi Gelato
In short
Hi Gelato is a gelato café on Toseong-ro in Gangneung, about a 10-minute walk from Gangneung Central Market. On a birthday trip, a couple ate their way through the market and then ordered a large size at Hi Gelato with two flavors, sundubu (soft tofu) and corn, plus the signature Hi Gelato cup of ricotta blueberry and lemon sorbet and a small taste of ssukjeolmi (mugwort rice cake). The sundubu gelato was good enough that even a boyfriend who rarely eats dessert called it delicious.

For my birthday this year, my boyfriend and I took a trip to Gangneung~
Since we were in Gangneung, we also checked out Gangneung Central Market. After wandering around eating this and that, by the end we were really craving something sweet haha. There are tons of famous foods to look up for Gangneung Central Market, but after eating so much at the market, we actually wanted something light like a dessert~

So while looking up desserts near Gangneung Central Market, I got a craving for gelato and headed to Hi Gelato. I usually like gelato anyway, so I was curious whether they'd have flavors you could only find in Gangneung, and there turned out to be so many fun menu options.
How long is the walk from Gangneung Central Market to Hi Gelato?

It took about 10 minutes to walk from Gangneung Central Market to Hi Gelato! Hi Gelato is on the 1st floor at 158 Toseong-ro, Gangneung, so it was perfect to walk over right after finishing up at the market.

We ordered the Hi Gelato and a large size gelato~
For the large size, you can pick two flavors, so while deciding what to get, since we'd come all the way to Gangneung, we wanted to pick something special that you can only get here.

So we ordered sundubu (soft tofu) and corn gelato!

And we also got a small taste of the ssukjeolmi flavor~
What do Hi Gelato's soft tofu and corn gelato taste like?
Sundubu and corn gelato, dessert at Gangneung Central Market

Honestly, sundubu gelato was my first time trying it, so I was most curious about the taste. At first I wondered if sundubu would even go well with gelato, but once I tried it, it worked way better than expected~~

It genuinely tasted like sweet tofu, like eating freshly made Chodang sundubu as ice cream! The nutty, mild flavor unique to sundubu came through subtly, and it really felt like a taste of the local Gangneung area. Since it was my first time trying this kind of flavor, I was glad I chose it.

The corn flavor tasted sweet and nutty, like Chodang corn~ Corn desserts are pretty common elsewhere so the flavor felt familiar, but the corn flavor here was rich and delicious.
If you're visiting Gangneung, I think the sundubu + corn combo is a good pick~ Both sundubu and corn are ingredients you'd associate with Gangneung, so it really gave off that traveling-in-Gangneung feeling haha.
What is in the signature Hi Gelato cup?
So what does Gangneung's Hi Gelato taste like?

We also ordered the signature menu item, Hi Gelato~ It's a mix of ricotta blueberry and lemon sorbet, and the blueberry smoothie part had a slightly more luxurious feel.
The tangy-sweet blueberry combined with the thick, creamy texture unique to ricotta made for a rich flavor. Bits of lemon sorbet were mixed in throughout, which added a nice refreshing touch~
If it had been all thick and creamy the whole way through, it might have felt a bit heavy, but thanks to the lemon sorbet, the finish stayed clean.

The sundubu and corn gelato were both delicious, and the Hi Gelato was great too with its tangy-sweet flavor.

For me, the sundubu gelato I tried for the first time worked better than I expected and was delicious, and the corn flavor was great because the corn flavor really came through strong.
