Today I visited Goyu, a new hotspot in Gyeongju. It's located right on the main street of Hwangnidan-gil, and it's such a stylish fusion Korean dining spot that it works great for a date or for taking friends visiting town, so let me introduce it right away.

Where is Goyu and what are its hours?

Goyu is located at 49 Sajeong-ro, Gyeongju-si, Gyeongsangbuk-do, right on the main street of Hwangnidan-gil. It's open daily from 11:00 to 21:00, with a break time from 16:00 to 17:00 and last order at 20:00. Group seating is also available.

Exterior of Goyu on Sajeong-ro, Gyeongju

Doesn't the exterior feel true to Gyeongju's distinctive vibe while also looking really fresh and clean since it's a new spot?

A lot of restaurants around Hwangnidan-gil lean into a hanok or traditional look, and Goyu carries a bit of that Gyeongju regional flavor too while being decorated beautifully like a proper Korean dining restaurant.

There's also this outdoor wooden platform, which seemed to be waiting seating.

Once you step inside, it's just as clean and pleasant overall as the exterior suggests.

Interior of Goyu with a Korean dining atmosphere

It feels less like a traditional Korean restaurant and more like a Gyeongju-style Korean dining space, so it seemed great for a date or a meal out with friends.

What comes in Goyu's 53,000-won signature kimchijjim set?

Goyu also offers individual dishes, but we went with the set menu since it had great value and a solid lineup.

  • Pork kimchi stew for 2
  • Potato pancake
  • Eggplant gangjeong
  • Zero-sugar cola

The drinks menu ranged from traditional liquors to Gyeongju-specific ones — isn't it kind of fascinating that they even have an Emille Bell liquor? 🫢

The table starts with geotjeori and beef radish soup

First came the geotjeori (fresh seasoned cabbage) and beef radish soup — with more meat than radish... 💛 nutty and refreshing, the soup quality was top notch.

Even with just one set ordered, so many dishes came out that the table felt completely full. Rather than eating one lone dish, having several dishes laid out at once really gave that full Korean-meal feeling you want on a trip.

Cheese potato pancake crisp enough to cut without scissors

The cheese potato pancake had crispy browned edges while the center kept that classic fluffy, chewy potato texture — doesn't it look amazing? It also comes with a spicy mayo sauce on the side.

They cut it up into neat pieces for us, and it was so crisp that scissors weren't even needed. Later on I just cut pieces off with a spoon, and that worked just fine too.

You could really taste the potato's natural nuttiness, plus that golden crispy exterior — it was a side dish, but this was the one we finished first, empty plate and all ✨🤍

Dipping it in the mayo sauce gave it a spicy-salty kick that made you crave makgeolli (rice wine) 🥹

Pork kimchijjim for two: a whole head of kimchi and big chunks of pork

Then came the kimchijjim (braised kimchi stew) for two. It arrived in a huge bowl, generously filled, with big pieces of pork and tofu mixed in. On top was a heap of long-cut scallion strips and a sprinkle of sesame seeds — doesn't it look irresistible?

The kimchi went in practically as a whole head, braised so long it fell apart just by lifting it with chopsticks 🫢

The pork pieces were huge, and eating them together with the kimchi let the seasoning flavors blend perfectly.

The meat, too, just fell apart the moment you lifted it with chopsticks — completely moist and tender ✨

The tofu chunks were generously sized too, and switching between meat and tofu kept the texture interesting instead of just eating meat the whole time.

Seasoning is everything in a kimchijjim, and the broth here was salty, savory, and amazing with rice — total rice thief.

Eggplant gangjeong was the best dish of the meal

The most unexpected discovery in the set was the eggplant gangjeong (sweet-savory fried eggplant). When you hear 'eggplant dish,' you usually picture it lightly stir-fried or dressed, but this one came gangjeong-style, which felt refreshingly different.

Goyu's eggplant gangjeong coated in chili sauce

The crispy fried eggplant was coated in a garlic-heavy, gganpunggi-style chili sauce, topped with sesame seeds, chili, and minced vegetables.

The sauce-coated exterior gave a sweet-salty punch, while the inside kept the eggplant's characteristic moist, soft texture — the top dish of the day, no contest!!

If you already like eggplant, you'll love this for sure, and even if you don't usually eat much eggplant, the gangjeong style makes it super easy to enjoy.

Is the kimchijjim set enough food for two people?

The signature kimchijjim set was an absolutely stuffing amount for two people ✨👍 If it were just the pork kimchijjim alone, you might want to add a side dish, but with the potato pancake and eggplant gangjeong included too, it was more than plenty.

At first it was fun trying a bit of everything since there was so much variety, and as we kept eating, each dish turned out to have a decent portion, making it far more filling than expected. If you're drinking alongside it, this could easily stretch to 3–4 people. Massively recommend!! ❤️

  • Goyu, a new hotspot in Gyeongju
  • A recommended restaurant on Hwangnidan-gil
  • A hearty signature set with kimchijjim and eggplant gangjeong packed in
  • Great pick as a bar too, with plenty of traditional and Gyeongju liquors

Is Goyu worth a visit in Gyeongju?

If you're looking for a restaurant on Hwangnidan-gil during a Gyeongju trip, this is a great place to stop by — clean atmosphere, hearty Korean food. This time we tried the signature kimchijjim set, and with the pork kimchijjim, potato pancake, and eggplant gangjeong all served together, it was great for two people to sample a variety of dishes, with a genuinely generous portion.

It's not just a place for a regular meal either — they also sell a wide range of traditional and Gyeongju-related liquors, so in the evening it seemed like a great spot to pair Korean dishes with local drinks. Highly, highly recommend to anyone looking for a new Gyeongju hotspot or a Korean restaurant on Hwangnidan-gil 🤍✨❤️
